Mia Thermopolis and Michael Moscovitz's Relationship is the main relationship throughout the series.

Early Years

Mia grew up spending lots of time in the Moscovitz home, due to her friendship with Lilly Moscovitz. Mia claims to have been in love with Michael since first grade.[1] Around the beginning of her freshman year Mia develops a substantial crush on Michael. He is hinted at feeling the same way, though Mia doesn't realize it.[2] In fact, Michael has had a crush on Mia since the first time he saw her on inline skates and she kept falling and getting back up, which he thought was cute.[3] Michael intends to ask Mia to the Cultural Diversity Dance, but is beaten to the punch by Josh Richter, which upsets Michael, though he is comforted by the knowledge that Mia's bodyguard, Lars, will be with them the whole time.[2]

When Mia begins receiving anonymous love notes she secretly hopes they are from Michael. Michael invites her to attend Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween, though she is not sure if she can attend. She is ultimately able to go and wear her pink bridesmaids dress that she had hoped Michael would be able to see her in. She sits next to Michael at the movie and afterward at Round the Clock for pancakes, but Kenny Showalter ends up sitting on her other side. Kenny ultimately reveals himself to be Mia's secret admirer and asks her out. After she somewhat reluctantly agrees he puts his arm around her, which alarms Michael and causes him to stand up and announce that he is ready to leave, even though not everyone had finished eating their food yet. As everyone piles into the limo Michael stops Mia and tells her that she looks really beautiful in her dress.[4]

With Kenny and Mia dating, Michael begins to spend time with Judith Gershner. Mia still harbors a crush on Michael and asks multiple people for advice, including her father, her grandmother, Sebastiano, and Tina. Mia decides to send Michael anonymous love notes the same way Kenny did for her, with the help of Tina and Lars. Michael discovers from his sister that Mia is the one sending the notes and designs a computer program revealing his feelings to show her at the Nondenominational Winter Carnival. When Mia sees the program she screams and jumps back, believing that Michael is making fun of her. As she runs off with Tina Kenny stops her and breaks up with her, believing that she is in love with Boris.[5]

Embarrassed by the whole situation Mia resolves to move to Genovia to get away from everything and avoid further humiliation, however Grandmère tells her that is cowardly and forces her to go to the Nondenominational Winter Dance - wearing the dress Sebastiano designed for her specifically to make Michael see her as more than just his little sister's friend. Mia arrives at the dance but has to sit with Lars and Wahim as all of her friends have dates and Michael is not even there. Lilly calls Michael when Mia arrives and he rushes to the dance, arriving just as she is about to leave. Michael tells her that he didn't mean to make her cry and Mia reveals that she thought he was making fun of her. Michael says he would never do that and kisses her. They slow dance for the rest of the evening and Lilly reveals that she knew the whole time that they liked each other but didn't say anything as a social experiment to see how long it would take for them to figure it out for themselves.[5]

Dating

Mia and Michael begin dating, but Mia immediately leaves for Genovia. They have difficulty getting in touch with one another due to busy schedules and the time difference. Mia becomes paranoid that Michael will leave her for a surfer resembling Kate Bosworth. They are able to talk a few times while Mia is in Genovia, but she ends up tired the next day from staying up too late. Grandmère tells her that if she wants to keep Michael interested she needs to play hard to get and gives her a copy of Jane Eyre.[1]

When Mia returns Michael asks her to go to the Screening Room to see Star Wars on the same night as the Black and White Ball, which Mia did not yet know about. Mia is afraid to cancel on Michael after she finds out about the ball because she thinks he will break up with her, even though he reveals to everyone that they are dating by coming in to her algebra classroom to compare schedules on the first day of the new semester. Mia tries to compromise by asking Grandmère if Michael can be her escort, but René is already set to be Mia's escort. Mia is able to get out of the ball, but agrees to go anyway as a favor to Grandmère. Mia ends up telling Michael the morning of the ball that she cannot go on the date, and Michael says he understands, but seems distant. René helps Mia escape the ball and she heads to Michael's where he has prepped his own version of the Screening Room at his apartment. Mia is pleasantly surprised that he is not breaking up with her and confirms that he likes her as more than a friend. Mia gives him his birthday present, hints that she knows Tall Drink of Water was about her, and suggests a name for Michael's band[1].

For the first Valentine's Day Mia becomes concerned because Dr. Steve tells her she should end up with a Leo and Michael is a Capricorn. Tina tells Mia that she needs to make sure that their first Valentine's Day goes well. Mia and Lilly argue in the limo about the origins of Valentine's Day, and Michael corrects them telling them about the real origin and Lupercalia day. Mia asks Michael if he believes in celebrating Valentine's Day and he admits he doesn't. Mia asks Mr. Gianini if he has always believed in celebrating Valentine's Day, and he admits he didn't until he met Helen. He tells Mia that it doesn't matter if they celebrate Valentine's Day, as long as they know how they feel about each other. Helen asks Mia what she and Michael are doing for Valentine's Day and Mia tells her that Michael doesn't believe in celebrating. Helen tells her that even if Michael doesn't want to celebrate she can still give him something if she wants to celebrate.[6]

Mia surprises Michael at lunch on Valentine's Day with a coupon book she has made him, and Michael immediately redeems a Kiss coupon. Michael has a change of heart and is able to make a reservation at One if by Land, Two if by Sea and tries to redeem a Dinner Date coupon, but Mia tells him that since he didn't want to celebrate she has already made plans to spend the night at Tina's. Michael feels bad, as he has never had a girlfriend on Valentine's Day. They agree to celebrate Lupercalia together the next night instead. Before Mia leaves her house for Tina's, Michael has Ronnie let him out on to their shared fire escape, where he plays Tall Drink of Water for Mia as her Valentine's present.[6]

Mia and Michael both go on the spring break Housing for the Hopeful trip to Hominy Knob, West Virginia, though Mia admits she is primarily going so she can make out with Michael. Michael pulls Mia behind a tree to kiss her after they arrive at camp, but due to fumes on the bus Mia's hair smells like vomit. They are in the same house building group, and Michael volunteers them to do inventory, which Mia believes is a ploy so they can make out, but Michael actually intends to do inventory. They are able to shower thanks to Grandmère, and after the campfire that evening Mia goes with Michael to put away his guitar and they are finally able to make out on the trip.[7]

Michael e-mails Mia for her birthday. He convinces Skinner Box to skip class and play their new song Princess of My Heart (which Michael wrote for Mia) during G&T on her birthday. At her birthday dinner Michael gives her a snowflake necklace, to remember their first kiss at the dance. Mia desperately wants to go with Michael to his senior prom, but he has not asked her and is uninterested in attending. Mia tries to hint at it, but he does not pick up her clues. During a game of Seven Minutes in Heaven Michael tells Mia he would rather go bowling than go to prom, as he thinks it's stupid, which upsets Mia.[8]

When Michael finds out that Helen has passed out by calling Phillipe he rushes to the hospital to be with Mia. Michael says he would maybe go to prom if the other guys from his band were there. Mia tries unsuccessfully to convince Lana to let Skinner Box play at prom, but after prom is cancelled due to the strikes and Grandmère finds a place to host it, Lana agrees to letting Skinner Box play. Mia tells Michael and finally admits to him that she wants to go to prom really badly, which surprises him. They attend prom, but halfway through have to leave as Helen goes into labor.[8]

Mia and Michael spend time together before Mia has to leave for the summer and Michael begins at Columbia. Mia and Michael aren't able to talk as much, being at different schools, but still plan to spend time together on the weekends. After Lana makes a comment to Mia on the first day of school Mia begins to stress out that Michael expects her to have sex with him, which she is not ready for. Michael seems to hint at the same by offering to come over while Helen and Frank are out of town. Michael is annoyed that Mia invites her friends over to the hotel instead of him. Mia goes over to Michael's dorm and panics when she sees condoms in his medicine cabinet. While they are making out she blurts out that she is not ready to have sex, which does not surprise Michael. She asks about the condoms and Michael explains that he got them at orientation, but even if he had bought them she should be glad that he wanted to be safe. Mia apologizes for the hotel thing and Michael asks her when she thinks she will be ready to have sex. Put on the spot she steals Tina's idea, which Michael immediately shuts down. He tells her she doesn't have to decide right now but that he isn't going to wait around forever, which upsets Mia.[9]

Michael tries to call Mia and e-mail her but she doesn't respond. Michael shows up after the election and tells Mia they have to talk. They walk to a pizza place nearby and Michael tells her he saw the debate and she did really well. Michael asks her if they are ever going to have sex, which Mia says they will. He asks if it will be by the end of the decade and she says definitely. They agree to reevaluate where they stand on sex every 3 months and go to get gelato.[9]

Phillipe flies Michael out to Genovia for Christmas after Mia complains about missing Rocky's first Christmas. Mia is trying to get the perfect gift for Michael and bids online for an original Star Wars poster. Mia arranges for Michael to have the room in the palace with a balcony that adjoins to hers. The first night he is there he comes to the balcony and they make out before being interrupted by the cat Mia fed the night before with some of its friends. Michael does not want to feed the cat, but Mia convinces him. After this he goes to bed as he is too tired from jet lag.[10]

On Christmas, Michael asks if he and Mia can be excused to exchange their gifts to each other in private, which Grandmère allows. They go out to the garden and Michael opens his present from Mia - the original Star Wars poster. Michael reveals that he was the one selling the poster so that he could afford to get something nice for Mia. Mia is upset and offers to get him something else, but he tells her that he loves the poster and she couldn't have gotten him anything better - plus it is even more special now as it was a gift from her. Mia opens her gift from Michael to find the Military Xander figure from Buffy the Vampire Slayer - the only one she was missing before she sold Fiesta Giles to buy the poster for Michael. She laments to him that she sold Fiesta Giles and he laughs - happy that they each sacrificed something they loved to get something for the other person, and they kiss.[10]

Mia and Michael continue dating, even though they don't get to see each other as often with Michael at school, and in the spring he invites her to a party he is throwing at his parents' house while they are out of town. Mia wants to go but is nervous about being at a college party with college girls, though she pretends to be excited to Michael. Michael asks Mia if he can go to Grandmère's benefit, Aide de Ferme, as he would like to meet Bob Dylan, who is also attending. Mia goes to Michael's house the night before his party for a dystopian movie marathon for one of his classes and makes dip to have at the party.[11]

Mia is nervous at the party and wears a somewhat ridiculous outfit to fit in, including a miniskirt she cut herself and a beret and red lipstick she borrows from her mother. She grabs a beer, which shocks Michael, and when he asks her about it she blows him off and goes to dance, even though no one else is dancing. J.P. gets up to dance with her and she shimmies toward him, which appears to be an attempt at a sexy dance move to everyone else. The Drs. Moscovitz return home unexpectedly and Michael follows them to their room while Mia, embarrassed, gathers her things and leaves.[11]

Mia tries to get ahold of Michael - by sending him bagels, a cookie with I'M SORRY written on it, and multiple e-mails and messages, but he just texts her "WE NEED 2 TALK." Mia finally just shows up at his dorm room and apologizes for everything, but Michael reveals he wasn't avoiding her - he had just discovered that his parents were separating. He wanted to tell her immediately when he found out, but she had already left the party. Mia is shocked and tells Michael she is sorry for everything - including her behavior at the party, but she was intimidated by the college girls. Michael tells her he shouldn't have been intimidated and that he doesn't want a party girl, he just wants - but he is interrupted by Doo Pak, who answers a phone call from Michael's mother, which Michael takes and Mia sadly leaves. She sends him a long apology e-mail from the limo on Lars' sidekick.[11]

Mia is worried when she finds out she has to kiss J.P. in Braid! and tries to find a way out of it, but Grandmère blackmails her. The night of the performance Michael shows up in J.P.'s Gustav costume for the final kiss between his and Mia's characters. Mia is excited that Michael, Lilly, and J.P. came up with this plan so that Mia wouldn't have to kiss J.P.. Michael gets to meet Bob Dylan and at the end of the night asks Mia how she is, and she tells him (truthfully) that she is good.[11]

With the Drs. Moscovitz separated Michael and Mia have less time to spend together as he spends each Friday night with one of his parents. Michael IMs Mia about her upcoming birthday and she tells him she doesn't want to have a party, she just wants a romantic night with him, which he takes to mean sex, but she clarifies she just meant dinner. She misses the old days when they would just go ice skating and things were simpler. They agree that form no own they will only give each other presents that they have made themselves.[12]

Mia tells Michael about Grandmère's ridiculous plan for her to be on My Super Sweet Sixteen and he agrees with her that it is a bad idea, but he thinks that she should do something so that her friends can celebrate her and tells her that she should forgive Lilly. On her birthday Michael calls her and confirms that she just wants to have a romantic night with him, which she does, and he tells her he will pick her up at 6pm.[12]

Michael picks Mia up and they go down to the limo where Hans starts driving without Michael even telling him where to go. The arrive at Rockefeller center where the ice rink is still up and has a wedding tent around it. They go inside and Michael reveals that he, along with the help of Phillipe, Helen, and Mr. G, planned an ice-skating party for her with all her friends so they could celebrate. He gives Mia a Segway-like Human transporter that he built. "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" plays and Mia and Michael skate out to join their friends.[12]

Break Up

Michael brings Mia to Number One Noodle Son and tells her that he has gotten an amazing opportunity to work on his robotic arm in Japan. Mia mistakenly believes that he will only be gone for a week or two, but Michael informs her that he will actually have to be gone for a year, maybe more, and will not be able to return for any holidays as he will have to be working the whole time. Mia starts to freak out and asks him what will happen to their relationship and he tells her that they'll be fine, of course he'll miss her, but frankly time away from her might not be the worst thing as they aren't having sex. He tells her that he is willing to wait, but that it might be easier if he doesn't have to take cold showers every weekend. He also tells her that he is going to Japan for their relationship - to prove to her family that he is worthy of dating a princess. She tells him that he doesn't need to prove himself because she already love him but Michael tells her he would never be happy just being a consort and he drops her off at home. They go out the next night to do all the last New York things before Michael leaves and Mia tells him not to make plans for the next night as she plans to surprise him with a hotel room for them to have sex.[13]

The next night she meets him at his mom's apartment and they sneak out to go to the hotel room Grandmère gave Mia at the Ritz Carlton. They order room service and after dinner Mia asks Michael if he remembers the last time she had a hotel room to herself and she invited the girls over and not him. He tells her that he does and she notes that this time it's the same circumstances but she invited him. Mia tells Michael that she's given it a lot of thought and she's ready to have sex with him. Michael doesn't seem surprised but asks her if she's sure, which confuses Mia. Michael wants to make sure that Mia won't be upset if they have sex and then he leaves for Japan to make sure she won't feel like he's abandoning her. Mia lies and says that's not why she wants to have sex but she's surprised he would want to leave if regular sex was on the table but Michael tells her again that he has to go to prove himself to her family.[13]

Mia tells Michael that before they leave she thinks that they should share the Precious Gifts of their Virginity with each other, but Michael asks her what she is talking about. Mia reiterates that they should give each other the Precious Gifts of their Virginity but Michael laughs and says he gave away his "precious gift" a long time ago, which shocks Mia. Mia asks Michael if he's a virgin and Michael says of course not and that she already knew that, but Mia yells back that she did not know. Michael starts to look alarmed and tells Mia that he knows they never talked about it but he didn't think it was a big deal but this makes Mia even more mad and she continues to yell. Michael tells her it was before he even knew that she liked him so he didn't think it would matter and Mia asks him who he slept with. Michael doesn't want to tell her as he's worried she'll get more angry, but he finally relents and tells her he slept with Judith Gershner. Mia freaks out even more, wondering if they were in love and if they used protection, but Michael says it shouldn't matter because she was dating Kenny at the time. Mia takes this as Michael blaming her for this, which he is not trying to do, but he brings up Josh Richter. This makes Mia even more angry and she yells at Michael for just expecting her to wait around while he's off in Japan and Michael gets really quiet and asks her what she means. Mia tells him that it's not fair of him to go off to Japan and expect her to just sit at home like a nun when she is only 16. Michael tells her that's not what he wants but he assumed she wouldn't want to see anyone else because he doesn't plan on dating anyone else, but asks her if that's what she really wants. Mia does not want this at all but can't stop herself from saying that if he could keep the fact that he slept with Judith from her then their relationship might not be as good as she thought. Michael yells at her that she never asked him but Mia continues that if he's willing to move to a whole other country then clearly the relationship never meant that much to him anyway. Michael shakes his head and tells Mia not to do this, but she takes off her snowflake necklace and holds it out to him. Michael angrily tells her not to do this, but she drops the snowflake necklace and runs from the room.[13]

Michael tries to call Mia at home, but Helen tells him it's not a good time to talk, so he e-mails her that night and again in the morning, telling her that he'll be waiting when she picks up Lilly so they can talk. Mia instead calls Lilly and tells her that she can't pick her up. He texts her later in the day to tell her that he is going to come so they can talk. He shows up after Mia's chemistry class but sees her hug and kiss J.P. and leaves, even though Mia calls his name, before Mia can explain that it was an accident and she only meant to kiss him on the cheek. After talking with her father Mia realizes that she has to try and talk to Michael so she and Lars rush to the hospital in a cab, but due to traffic they arrive at the airport just as Michael's flight leaves. Mia arrives home and after a fight with Lilly makes plans with J.P. to go see Beauty and the Beast so they can ignore their problems, but before she leaves Mia e-mails Michael, saying simply, "I'm sorry."[13]

After receiving Mia's e-mail Michael calls her and tells her he's sorry they have to have the conversation over the phone but he thought about it during his entire plane ride and thinks they would be better off if they went back to just being friends like they were before they started dating. Michael thinks time apart (and seeing other people) might be good for them. Mia is heartbroken and even though she doesn't want to she agrees before hanging up so Michael will not hear her cry.[14]

Michael e-mails Mia to keep her up to date on his trip to Japan, but Mia cannot bring herself to respond and deletes his message. Michael e-mails again and updates Mia on his work on his robotic arm and hoping she is feeling better as he heard she is sick. He asks her to e-mail him back as he would love to hear from her, but Mia deletes it again. Michael e-mails again after Kenny blows up the chem lab but Mia deletes that one as well. After Mia's Domina Rei speech Michael e-mails Mia again and for the first time in a long time she laughs at something he has said, which allows Mia to believe that they could possibly be friends and for the first time Mia e-mails him back.[14]

The continue to e-mail a few times a month back and forth. Michael eventually asks to read Mia's senior project, but she does not want to reveal that she lied about its nature and stops e-mailing him back.[15]

Reunion

Michael returns from Japan after a successful release of the CardioArm. He is scheduled to donate a CardioArm to his alma mater, Columbia. Mia considers asking Michael to bump Genovia to the head of the line for a CardioArm and Mia attends the donation ceremony. When she sees Michael she realizes there is a part of her that still has feelings for him, even though she has been in a relationship with J.P. since she and Michael broke up, though she suspects that Michael is dating one of his programmers, Midori. Lilly drags her up to speak to Michael and suggests she and Michael have a private interview, as Mia is covering the story for the Atom. Michael tells her to bring a copy of her senior project so he can finally read it.[15]

Mia records her interview with Michael and Michael embarrasses her by telling her that she is the reason he went to Japan to design the CardioArm and was the thing he missed most about the U.S.. He asks to read over her senior project and she admits to him that it is a romance novel, which only intrigues him further. She e-mails it to him, but he laughs when he sees her pen name, so they argue and Mia accidentally spills hot chocolate on him. As they conclude the interview Mia extends her hand to shake, but Michael asks for a hug and when she smells his neck she feels all of her feelings rushing back. As she listens to the recording later Mia realizes that Michael was flirting with her.[15]

Michael sends an envelope to school with Lilly for Mia containing a note for Mia wishing her a happy birthday and telling her that he loved her book. As a birthday present Michael includes a Hoth Leia flash drive with a back-up copy of Mia's book on it. Michael attends Mia's party is surprised to hear that Mia didn't get in to any colleges and plans on attending the University of Genovia. Michael leaves the party suddenly when J.P. promposes to Mia and Mia sees him go and feels a last ember of hope inside of her die.[15]

Phillipe calls Mia to tell her that the Royal Genovian Hospital received and unexpected donation of a CardioArm. Mia texts Michael to see if she can thank him over dinner and he texts back that he only sent the arm to help Phillipe, which he knew would make Mia happy. He suggests they get dinner, but Mia has to turn him down as she has J.P.'s play and instead suggests they get lunch, which she considers unromantic. Michael agrees to lunch but suggests a very romantic restaurant in Central Park.[15]

Mia realizes that she has always been more attracted to Michael than J.P. because of a histocompatibility complex. She is shocked to find out that Boris has been keeping an eye on her for Michael the whole time they have been broken up.[15]

Mia and Michael meet for lunch and she tells him she got a publishing deal. Michael toasts to her success and, spying her ring, asks if she and J.P. are engaged, but Mia tells him it is a friendship ring. She tells him that J.P. might be taking a year off to go to Hollywood and Michael is surprised that they would do long distance until she explains that he asked her to go with him. Michael tells her she will do the right thing, as she always does in the end, and Mia is shocked as he better than anyone should know that she doesn't, as she blames herself for ruining their relationship. Michael tries to take responsibility for the break-up, but Mia tells him he did the right thing as they both needed a break. Michael agrees but tells her he didn't think she'd get engaged in the meantime, which shocks Mia, but Michael laughs and tells her he didn't expect her to wait around. Their conversation falls back to how they used to talk, back when and before they were dating, and Michael picks up the tab for lunch.[15]

Michael asks her what she is doing for the rest of the day and takes her on a carriage ride through Central Park (though she initially objects). The cart lurches forward and Michael puts his arm around her and before she knows it they are making out. When the carriage stops Mia panics. Michael starts to tell Mia that she had to have known he still loves her, but Mia stops him and tells him not to say it before grabbing Lars and running off. Michael texts her that he is not sorry and will wait for her.[15]

After realizing all of J.P.'s lies, Mia breaks up with him at prom and calls the Royal Genovian Lawyers, but as she hangs up the phone she sees Michael there. She asks him why he is there and he asks why she thinks he's there, so she asks how long he was standing there and Michael tells her he was there long enough to be nauseated and tells her she made a nice move by calling the lawyers before imitating her telling J.P. to call Stacey Cheeseman. Mia again asks Michael why he's there and he tells her that Lilly told him to come to the Waldorf around midnight on prom night because Mia might need him and asks why Lilly might think that. Mia jokingly suggests that Lilly must have known that she always wanted to spend her prom night with him. Michael asks Lars if he should go back and beat J.P. up, which Lars endorses, but Mia objects. She suggests that instead Lars should take the rest of the night off and she and Michael should go back to his place.[15]

At his apartment, Michael gives Mia back her snowflake necklace, having found and kept it after their fight in hopes that they would someday get back together. He offers to buy her a diamond one to replace the silver snowflake. Michael explains that he never stopped loving her, but due to Boris' e-mails he believed that she and J.P. were totally in love and happy together, but when he saw her at the CardioArm event he started to think Boris was wrong. Mia and Michael sleep together and in the morning return to the loft, where Helen is thrilled to see they have gotten back together. They go to Mia's graduation and dance at the reception, where Mia is happy that, despite all the hassles being a princess has come with, she is getting a happy ending.[15]

Later Relationship and Marriage

Michael attends Barack Obama's inauguration with Mia and goes to Genovia to visit her over her spring break. Michael plays along when Mia's suitemate, Pamela, thinks that Michael is the one that kidnapped her Cabbage Patch doll and has a crush on her. Michael is Mia's +1 for the royal wedding. He makes a joke about the two of them eloping, which goes over Mia's head.[16]

Mia and Michael see each other less and less due to their busy schedules, though they maintain an inventive sex life including games they've invented such as Fireman. Michael decides to surprise Mia with a vacation to the Bahamas to get engaged. Before they leave he asks Helen and Phillipe for their blessing. While they are in the Bahamas Michael arranges for a special dinner to be delivered. Mia finds rose petals leading to their dinner and after Michael toasts she finds an engagement ring in her champagne glass. Michael gets down on one knee and proposes to her, telling her that the diamond is lab-grown and that he doesn't want to risk not being able to be with her if something happens to her if they are not married. Mia suggests they elope to avoid the royal wedding hoopla but Michael tells her that his parents will be disappointed if they don't have a wedding. They agree to a small ceremony to make their families happy.[17]

When they return from the Bahamas they discover that their engagement news has already been publicized, which upsets them both. Due to the publicity they have to check in at a hotel under the names Mr. and Mrs. James T. Kirk. Mia tells Michael about Olivia Harrison and decides to go get her, against Michael's advice that she talk to her father first. Michael texts her to let her know that someone has posted a photo of her in New Jersey and that pictures of her with Olivia are all over the internet. He tells her he will try to get ahold of her dad while he is in court and tells her that he agrees with Phillipe and they should get a prenup. He meets them back at the plaza but attacks J.P. after he plans to sell tickets to the wedding.[17]

When Michael sees Mia's foot, which got slammed in a door by Catherine O'Toole, he insists she go to the doctor. Dr. Delgado tells them that Mia is pregnant and does an ultrasound revealing that she is having twins. Michael immediately downloads pregnancy and parenting books and beings to prepare while Mia panics. Michael suggests they move to Genovia so that the babies will have space but also keep an apartment in the city so that the babies can learn to appreciate NYC.[17]

Michael and Mia realize they will have to move the wedding up. They tell Grandmère, Phillipe, and Helen about the pregnancy.[17] Mia and Michael both move to NYC to have the babies and so Mia can take over the throne when Phillipe abdicates. Mia has horrible morning sickness but Michael brings her cold sesame noodles from NYC.[18] They joke about giving the babies Star Wars names.[17][19] Michael and Mia have their bachelor[20] and bachelorette parties at the palace. They attend the Royal Genovian Academy performance of All Roads Lead to Genovia and laugh so hard they cry.[19]

Mia and Michael-0

Mia and Michael are married by Prime Minister Cécile Dupris and take the traditional Genovian wedding vows, including the one about fish heads and pollution as they are not religious but wanted some form of tradition in their ceremony. Michael pledges his loyalty to Genovia, forsaking all other citizenship, and Mia lays a sword on his shoulders before declaring him Prince Michael Renaldo of Genovia. Prime Minister Dupris says they can kiss and Michael picks up Mia, knocking his crown off (which Boris catches). Olivia gives them a drawing of them at their rehearsal dinner for their wedding present.[19]

After the ceremony they rest in their room and Michael suggests they consummate the marriage, which Mia says is unnecessary as she is already pregnant, but they have sex anyway.[17] At the reception they share their first dance.[19]

Mia is put on bed rest due to stress during the last weeks of her pregnancy. Michael does not want anyone to know when she goes in to labor so they sneak out in a personal car of one of the members of the Royal Genovian Guard. They give birth to a boy and a girl but decide to wait a few days to get a sense of their personalities before they name them, ultimately deciding on Frank and Elizabeth Renaldo.[21]

Mia and Michael allow Olivia and her friends to babysit the twins while Michael supports Mia in court against Prince René. Michael participates in Mia's coronation and helps her put on the Robe of State before the ceremony.[20]
