Princess Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo (b. May 1, 1989) is the princess and heir to the throne of Genovia.
Biography
Early Life
Mia was born on May 1, 1989 to Helen Thermopolis and Phillipe Renaldo, Prince of Genovia. Her parents were unmarried and as Phillipe was young and believed he would have more children, Mia was not told her father was a prince and was raised as a regular kid on the isle of Manhattan, in Greenwich Village with her mother, a painter, and her twenty five pound orange tabby, Fat Louie.[1]
Mia had a thumb sucking problem as a child. When Mia was six all she wanted in the was a kitten, so Helen told her that if she quit sucking her thumb she could have a cat. On her birthday she received Louie.[2]

Mia's sixth birthday was Snow White themed, and Mia dressed up as Snow White for 4 years in a row.[3] Mia later dressed up for Halloween as Jasmine, but Helen made her wear long johns under her see-through harem pants, which dampened the look.[3] Helen used to make Mia take her candy to be X-rayed for razor blades.[4]

Mia had been back to visit her maternal grandparents in Versailles, Indiana only twice.[1] She met her cousin Hank the second time she was there.[5]
She regularly spent portions of her summer and winter breaks in Miragnac, her grandmother's chateau in France with her father and said grandmother.[1] In seventh grade, Mia did a fact sheet on Genovia and still did not realize her father was the monarch.[1] At some point, Phillipe contracted testicular cancer and had to have one of his testicles removed, ultimately rendering him infertile and necessitating his informing Mia of her royal lineage.[1]
Mia has been friends with Lilly Moscovitz since the two of them were in kindergarten.[1] When she was six years old, she met Michael Moscovitz for the first time. She was hanging upside down from monkey bars with blue lips from a popsicle she had eaten.[6]
Freshman Year
In the fall of 2003, Mia began attending Albert Einstein High School with Lilly, Lilly's brother Michael, and her friends Shameeka Taylor and Ling Su Wong.[1] She helps Lilly with her public access television program, Lilly Tells It Like It Is. She was placed in the Gifted and Talented class, along with Lilly and Michael, and Boris Pelkowski.[1] She developed a crush on Josh Richter who is dating her nemesis Lana Weinberger.[1] Lana regularly mocked and tormented Mia for a variety of reasons.[1]
After her mother revealed to her that she begun dating Mia's Algebra teacher, Mr. Gianini, Helen gave Mia a diary in which to talk about her feelings.[1]

Princess Diaries
Mia had to deal with her mother dating Mr. Gianini, and her father finally told her she is a princess and the sole heir to the throne of Genovia. She must take Princess Lessons from Grandmère, but is able to continue attending school at AEHS as long as she spends summer and winter breaks in Genovia. She developed a small crush on Michael, but she swore she would never tell Lilly about it. When her princess lessons caused her to cancel plans with Lilly, and then returned to Lilly with a full makeover, she and Lilly get into a fight. Michael offers to tutor her in Algebra, as she is currently flunking. The next morning, she saw Mr. Gianini in his underwear in her kitchen, as her mother had believed she was staying the night at Lilly's.
Not having anywhere to sit, due to her feud with Lilly, Mia began a friendship with Tina Hakim Baba, who haf been ostracized because she had a bodyguard who follows her everywhere. Lana mocks Tina, which prompts Mia to plunge an ice cream cone into her chest, earning Mia a week in detention.
The next day, Mia's face was on the front page of the New York Post, describing her as “Princess Amelia: New York’s Very Own Royal.” Her detentions were cancelled, as she seemed to have enough going on and she told her father that she no longer wanted to be a princess. He let her know that since that article had been published it was too late: there is no going back to the life she had before. Lars was assigned to follow her to all her classes. The press distracted from classes, and Lana and Josh tried to be her friends.
Josh and Lana broke up and the next day he asked Mia to the Cultural Diversity Dance, which she agreed to. Mia spent the night at Tina's and had a great time with her and her family. Mia's parents did not want her to go with Josh to the dance, but Grandmère inserted herself and allowed it. Josh was late to pick her up and made almost no conversation in the car. At the restaurant, he ordered everyone champagne and filet mignon, not knowing that Mia is a vegetarian. When they arrived to the dance an hour late, Josh hopped out of the car with Mia, without Lars, and kissed her in front of all the paparazzi that had gathered. Mia realized the whole date was a set up for a publicity moment and told Josh off before storming to the bathroom.
Tina and Lilly, who witnessed everything with Josh at AEHS, joined Mia in the bathroom and encouraged her to join them at the dance. Mia learnt that Michael also came without a date, so Mia won't even be the odd-man-out. Michael and Mia talked and danced, and Mr. G informed Mia that she raised her grade from an F to a D. Mia got permission to spend the night at the Moscovitzs' house and there Michael revealed to her that he had been learning guitar. Soon, he played a song he wrote, Tall Drink of Water, about a tall, beautiful girl who doesn't know a boy likes her.

Princess in the Spotlight
The Monday after the Cultural Diversity Dance, Helen told Mia that she was pregnant. Mia got panicked at the news and on the way to school Lilly instantly knew something was wrong. Mia realized her mother had not even told Mr. Gianini this information yet. When she got home, she gave all of their beer and coffee to Ronnie before heading to princess lessons. Grandmère revealed that she had arranged for Mia to be interviewed by Beverly Bellerieve on TwentyFour/Seven on Saturday. When Mia got home, Helen told her that she and Mr. G have decided to get married.
On Tuesday morning, Mia woke up with a sore throat and had to stay home from school. Lilly brought Mia her school work and kept her up to date with the school gossip. When Mia's fever continued to climb, Phillipe took her to Dr. Fung to get some antibiotics and codeine. On Thursday, a letter arrives at the loft for Mia from a secret admirer, calling her the "Josiest girl" he's ever met, and Mia was immediately intrigued. After watching an episode of Baywatch, Mia became concerned that she was betrothed to a foreign dignitary, which Lilly cleared up by asking Phillipe, who was confused by the question. Mia's friends all e-mailed her well wishes, including Michael, who sent an animation of Fat Louie and signed his off with "Love, Michael" and a mysterious e-mail from someone called JoCrox, which Mia quickly figured out is actually shorthand for Josie Rocks, who Mia highly suspected was Michael. Feeling slightly better and determined to discover JoCrox's true identity, Mia forced herself to go to school, but was sent to Principal Gupta's office for giving Michael some of her codeine after he complains of a headache.
Having been well enough to go to school, Mia was forced to go to her interview with Beverly Bellerieve, but due to a combination of codeine and nerves, she misunderstood a question that Beverly asked her, Mia inadvertently revealed that her mother is pregnant with her Algebra teacher's baby. This sent her father and grandmother into a panic. Mia spent the night at Lilly's, hoping to avoid her mother out of guilt, and was dared to drop an eggplant out of the Moscovitzs' sixteenth story window. After doing so, Michael pulled her to the ground to keep her from being implicated and told Lilly that she cannot air the footage on her TV show or Mia would be in trouble.
On Monday, Lana asked Mia and Michael if they were dating, which caused a raucous response from Lilly and elicited more laughter from Lana. After school, Mia discovered that Grandmère has flown to Vigo, the Royal Genovian Event Planner to plan a wedding for Helen and Frank, even though Mia was adamant that her mother would not want an elaborate royal wedding.
Mia's interview airws and afterwards, she begins receiving calls from her friends. The first call came from Lilly, who was upset that Mia had called their friend group freaks and revealed that Mrs. Hill did not monitor the Gifted & Talented class. Next, Shameeka called to let Mia know that her Halloween party was cancelled and that her father was looking at transferring her to another private school. Third, Tina called and was thrilled that Mia said her name on TV and her parents were happy for Mia's mom and that Mia mentioned Wahim. Michael IMed Mia to reassure her she did great and that Lilly will get over being mad at her. He also invited her to the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween.
The next day Mia was called into Principal Gupta's office again to discuss if Mia was unhappy with her time at AEHS and suggested she join more extracurriculars. However, Mia pointed out she does not have time for them. Later, Lilly gave Mia the cold shoulder, but Boris revealed to Mia that she had already started working on her book on post-Cold War adolescence. Mia's lab partner, Kenny Showalter, asked if Mia is planning on coming to Rocky Horror on Halloween.
When Mia arrived home, she saw that her maternal grandparents, Mamaw and Papaw Thermopolis, and her cousin, Hank Thermopolis, were in her loft. Helen, in a panic, called Phillipe, who agreed to put them up in a hotel. Mia then received more e-mails from JoCrox, leading her to continue to hope that they are secretly from Michael. The next day, Mia was forced to take Hank with her to school, and every girl in AEHS was enamored with him. Halfway through the day, Hank and Lilly disappeared and were not heard from until the evening, leading Mia to believe that they may have been kidnapped by Libyan terrorists. At princess lessons, Mia tried on her bridesmaid dress, which looked just like Glinda the Good Witch's dress from the Wizard of Oz. That night, Lilly Tells It Like It Is aired, and although Lilly edited the footage of Mia dropping the eggplant so that her identity was obscured, she included footage of Mia half asleep, which Mia did not know she had filmed, answering questions about what she will do when she assumes the throne.
The next day, Hank stayed home from accompanying Mia to school, but halfway through the day Lilly went missing again. When they resurfaced, Lilly refused to tell Mia where they were or what they were doing. Mr. Gianini moved into the loft ahead of the wedding and Mamaw was present at Mia's princess lessons, scheming with Grandmère for the wedding.
On Halloween morning, Mr. Gianini did not show up to class, instead having a substitute teacher, though he was in the loft that morning. Hank showed up in the middle of lunch, having undergone a makeover and revealing that he received a contract with Ford to become the newest underwear model for Calvin Klein. He credited Lilly for making him realize his dreams and passionately kissed her in thanks. Mia called Mamaw to let her know that Hank was ok, and was surprised to hear that the wedding is still happening.
Mia returned home and discoveres that many of her mom's toiletry items were missing and called her father, who assured her that everything is fine. She continued to get ready for the wedding with the other bridesmaids. At the time of the wedding, Phillipe gave Mia a letter from her mom and announced to the wedding guests that the bride and groom eloped in Cancun. The letter from her mom apologized to Mia and let her know that they wanted her there and were planning on having a smaller ceremony with her after they returned. She wrote that she didn't tell Mia because she didn't want her to have to lie to Grandmère.

Grandmère, distraught over the embarrassment, barricaded herself in her room, and neither Vigo nor Phillipe can get her to come out. Mia was able to coax her out using what she learned in her princess lessons. As it was Halloween, Phillipe asked Mia if there was anywhere she would rather be. Mia said she wanted to go to Rocky Horror, but as neither she nor Lars had any costumes they would be unable to get in, even if they could make it in time. Martha Stewart, who was attending the wedding, overheard the conversation and pulled a glue gun out of her bag, turning some menus into a crown and some stir sticks and ivy into a want. This resulted Mia turning into a beautiful Glinda. She declared that Lars can pass as James Bond without any changes as he was already in a dark suit. As Mia exited the Plaza, she stopped to address the paparazzi, specifically targeting Mr. Taylor and correcting things she previously said in her interview with Beverly.
Mia and Lars made it to Rocky Horror just in time, and Michael purchased two extra tickets just in case they were able to make it. Mia maneuvered so that she will be sitting between Michael and Lars, but she somehow ended up between Michael and Kenny with Lars sitting in the seat behind her. Both Kenny and Michael checked during the movie that she was laughing and enjoying herself. Afterwards, the whole group went to Rock the Clock to get pancakes where Kenny reveals himself to be JoCrox and asks Mia out. Mia agreed to be polite, and Kenny put his arm around Mia, which Michael immediately noticed and looked alarmed at. Michael declared it was late and he wanted to leave and Mia jumped after him, asking Lars to call the car. Kenny insisted on paying for Mia and Lars' food, while Michael refused to be reimbursed for the tickets, which embarrassed Mia as she had two boys paying for her at once. Everyone piled into the limo for the rides home. Before they got in, Michael stopped Mia to tell her that she looked really nice in her dress.
Princess in Love
Mia does two Thanksgivings in one day, one with her mom and Mr. G and Mr. and Mrs. Gianini's house (Mr. G's parents) and one with Grandmère and her father and foreign dignitaries. Mia has been dating Kenny since Halloween, but she doesn't really like him and still harbors feelings for Michael. Mia, Kenny, Tina, Dave, Lilly, and Boris go ice skating where they are joined by Michael and Judith Gershner, who Mia believes are dating. After Kenny tries skating backwards in front of Mia, she falls and bites through her tongue. Lars rushes her off to see Dr. Fung.
Mia goes to the Plaza where Grandmère has her itinerary for her trip to Genovia. Sebastiano, is there and Mia believes he may be secretly plotting to kill her. Mia escapes to the balcony with her father and asks him for advice on how to tell Michael that she likes him. He tells her she has to show him how she feels. Phillipe also tells her that he highly doubts Sebastiano is trying to kill her. Later that evening Kenny calls to apologize and tells Mia that he loves her, Mia panics and says "uh, ok, well see you tomorrow" before hanging up.
The next day in the limo Mia tells Lilly what Kenny said and Lilly does not believe her, though she reveals that Kenny has talked to Boris about the fact that Mia won't let Kenny kiss her. In class Lana passes Mia a note saying Kenny will have to wait a bit longer for frenching (due to the hole in Mia's tongue) which upsets Mia. Mia tells Tina about everything with Kenny and admits to her crush on Michael and Tina is supportive, though she reveals that Kenny also talked to Dave about the kissing issue. Kenny apologizes for making Mia uncomfortable.
Grandmère asks Mia what's bothering her and Mia lies to her about it, but Grandmère reveals that she always knows when Mia is lying as her nostrils flare. Mia tells her about her situation with Kenny and Michael. Grandmère tells her not to break up with Kenny until she has someone better, and when Mia objects as that is cruel Grandmère points out that it would be more cruel to break Kenny's heart right before finals, which could potentially ruin his grades.
The next day, Kenny shouts in the hallway "I don't care if you don't feel the same way, Mia! I will always love you!" Shameeka passes notes with Mia about the incident and tells Mia that Michael saw the whole thing but he didn't laugh. Lilly apologizes to Mia for not believing her about Kenny but chastises her for not being more in touch with her feelings. Michael defends Mia saying that she doesn't have to yell them in the hall to be in touch with her feelings. Kenny apologizes for embarrassing Mia and asks her to lunch later in the week.
Grandmère talks about how genius Kenny was to send his anonymous love letters as it lead to Mia dating him, which gives Mia the idea to do the same to Michael. She enlists Lars and Tina's help, having Tina write the card in her handwriting and slip it into Michael's locker. Lana teases Mia, asking if "[she's] going to walk out with [her] fat friend," in regards to the walkout. Mia asks Mr. G for the hall pass and she and Lars go out in the hall where Lars won't stop laughing. Mia devises a plan to pull the fire alarm to stop the walkout. Justin Baxendale passes them in the hall. Lars offers to pull the alarm for her, but Mia says she has to be the one to do it, because she couldn't have him take the fall if they get caught.
At Princess Lessons, Mia tries on every dress that Sebastiano has designed and he takes pictures of her in them to document it. Mia and Sebastiano get to talking and she tells him about her problems with Michael and how he only sees her as his little sister's best friend and that she has no date to the Nondenominational Winter Carnival and Dance. Sebastiano offers to design a dress for her for the dance that will cause Michael to think of her as more than just his little sister's best friend.
Mia sends Michael another anonymous love letter and Lilly makes Mia secretary of her new group, SACAEHS. Kenny and Mia go to lunch and Mia begins to believe he is getting over her as he orders dumplings with meat in them, after giving it up when they first started dating. Mia has Tina slip Michael another anonymous card.
The next day in Algebra, Lana slaps down an article declaring Mia the third most popular Royal (after Prince William and Prince Harry) and asks Mia if she'd be as popular if everyone knew she had pulled the fire alarm. Due to a combination of stresses Mia grabs Lana's cell phone and smashes it on the ground, stomping on it. She is sent to Principal Gupta's office and given a one day suspension. Mia returns home to her mother who declares that she needs a vacation, so they order take out and watch movies in Helen's bed - just like they used to before everything changed with the pregnancy and the princess situation. Tina calls and lets Mia know that she saw Michael get her second card and he slipped it into his backpack, though it was probably crushed by his laptop about 3 seconds later.
Mia attends the first meeting of SACAEHS but Lilly and Boris are the only other two to show up, which upsets Lilly. Mia goes to find Maya, who is in Michael's room - where Mia sees one of the cards she had Tina slip to Michael. The Drs. Moscovitz return home and reveal to Mia that she has been published in a fashion supplement in the Sunday Times. Mia is upset and rushes to the Plaza where her father is also upset and bans Sebastiano. When Sebastiano returns he is confused, as he had permission from Grandmère to publish them. Helen draws devil horns on all the little Mia's and hangs the supplement on the fridge back at the loft.
Lilly, Tina, Boris, and Kenny come over to study for finals but it quickly dissolves and they agree to get Chinese food from a restaurant. Mia sits next to Boris and realizes he isn't too bad and is pretty funny. Two little girls at the restaurant ask for Mia's autograph on the supplement. While she is out, Sebastiano calls multiple times and has the dress that he designed for the Nondenominational Winter Dance delivered.
At school, she gets lots of comments from other students and finds a yellow rose hanging out of her locker. As the Monday of finals week is Reading Day she spends all day in homeroom studying, with Kenny passing her notes. The next 3 days Mia continues to find roses sticking out of her locker and assumes that either Kenny is lying and is using it as a buildup to ask her to the dance or someone has mistaken her locker for someone else's, such as Lana who is always waiting there for Josh.
Mia gets help from Tina, Lilly, Lars, and the concierge from the Plaza to call a press conference, declaring that all of the proceeds from the dresses that Mia modeled will be going to Greenpeace, which upsets Sebastiano but gathers praise from her parents and peers. Tina reminds Mia that they signed up for Secret Snowflake and Mia realizes that this is who her yellow roses are coming from. She feels bad for forgetting that Tina was her Secret Snowflake and quickly signs her up for a Romance Novel of the Month club. Tina asks her when she is going to tell Michael that she is the one that has been leaving the notes and Mia says she never plans on telling him, but Tina makes her promise that she will tell him at the Carnival.
Mia doesn't want to check her grades and rushes to her locker after they are handed out, where Justin Baxendale is waiting for Josh, and Michael is waiting holding a yellow rose. Michael tells her it fell out of her locker and the note attached reveals Boris as her Secret Snowflake. Michael is there to see if Mia passed Algebra. When Mia sees that she get a B- she squeals and hugs Michael - right as Kenny comes around the corner.
At the Carnival, Tina drags Mia to the Computer Club booth where Michael pulls her to the front of the line and shows her a different program than anyone else sees. A castle appears and the screen goes over the wall into a rose garden where a poem similar to the ones Mia wrote appears, acknowledging Michael's love for Mia. Mia screams and jumps back before grabbing Tina and running away as Michael calls after her. Kenny stops her and breaks up with her, saying he knows she likes someone else and that he believes that person to be Boris. Mia wants to correct him but Tina stops her, telling her that it doesn't matter now.
Mia locks herself in her room at home and decides to move to Genovia but won't explain anything to her parents, who have Lars remove her bedroom door, forcing her to retreat to the fire escape where she talks with Ronnie. Grandmère eventually comes and apologizes for publishing her pictures, but tells Mia she believes that she needs to be more confident. When Grandmère realizes that Mia is trying to run away from her situation by moving to Genovia she forces Mia to put on the dress Sebastiano made for her and go to the dance.
Mia arrives at the dance and is greeted by Boris, Lilly, Dave, and Tina, who assures Mia that she has already told everyone that Mia and Kenny broke up. Mia sees Judith and her boyfriend and asks Lilly, who is using a payphone, where Michael is. Lilly again reminds Mia that Michael and Judith are not dating. Just a Mia is about to leave Michael rushes in. He apologizes for upsetting her and Mia tells him she thought he was mocking her. He says he would never do that and he kisses her and they spend the dance together. Lilly tells them that she knew they liked each other the whole time and didn't reveal it as a social experiment. Mia flies to Genovia for her winter break the next day, excited about all the change.
Princess in Waiting
Mia arrives in Genovia for her winter break and formal introduction to Genovian society. During a tour of the Prince Phillipe naval cruiser, Mia accidentally knocks the Admiral into the water. She makes a joke with the Genovian Olive Growers Association about how the Mediterranean drought must be the 'pits,' which is not well received. At her televised introduction to Genovia she strays from her script and ends up talking about the benefits that parking meters could have to the Genovian economy.

Mia keeps a countdown in her diary of how long it has been since she has seen Michael. They have difficulty getting a hold of one another, but she is able to talk to him briefly on Christmas. She is also able to talk to her mom and Mr. G.
At the 25th anniversary of Grandpère's death, Mia's veil falls into the harbor and has to be retrieved by Prince René. Michael and Mia continue to play phone tag while Mia notices a zit growing the day she has to sit for her Royal Portrait. Mia cannot e-mail Michael back or call him as she has to sit in on many hours of Parliament debating her parking meter idea.
Mia calls Tina for reassurance that Michael is not falling in love with a Floridian surfer girl that looks like Kate Bosworth and finally is able to talk to Michael on the phone without their families around. Mia realizes she forgot Michael's birthday and cannot think of anything to get him (and rejects the suggestions she is given). Mia and Michael stay up all night talking two nights in a row and Mia can barely stay awake during her princess duties. Grandmère confronts her about her behavior and tells her that if she wants to keep Michael she needs to play hard to get. Grandmère gives Mia a copy of Jane Eyre to read, which Mia also recommends to Tina. Together, Mia and Tina decide to use a Jane Eyre method of not chasing boys.

The Royal Dermatologist fixes Mia's zit. Mia finds out that the Film of Her Life that was being produced has been released earlier than she thought it would be, though Mia has not watched it. Mia meets Prince William at her farewell ball and manages to not embarrass herself (or Genovia). Mia is convinced Grandmère is trying to set her and Prince René up and is not happy about it.
Back in New York, Michael has left Mia a voicemail but she is apprehensive about calling him back as she doesn't want it to be construed as chasing. Helen tells her that it is just rude not to call back, however Mia misses the window to call him as the Drs. Moscovitz do not allow phone calls after 11pm. Mia IMs Michael and he asks her out on their first official date - to go the the Screening Room on Friday and see Star Wars. They end their conversation with the "I happen to like nice men," "I'm nice" quotes from The Empire Strikes Back.
On Tuesday, the first day of the new semester, Mia panics because she cannot find her lucky Queen Amidala underwear that she always wears on the first day of a new term. Mia worries that this will curse her whole semester to be awful. Mia is nervous about how to greet Michael in the limo and jumps out before Hans can to open the door and see him.
After schedules are passed out Michael goes to Mia's algebra class to compare schedules, revealing to everyone that they are officially dating. Mia begins to believe that she is the only one of her friends without a talent, but Lilly tells her she does have one - but she has to figure it out for herself. Mia falls asleep in the limo on the way to princess lessons and sleeps until she has to get up for the next day at school.
On Wednesday, Grandmère pulls Mia out of school (by lying about Phillipe being sick) to go shopping for a gown to wear to Contessa Trevanni's Black and White Ball, which is the same night as Mia's date. Mia calls her mom and tells her she has to get her out of going to the ball and Helen agrees to try to reach Phillipe to get Mia out of it. Back at school, Michael and Lilly are both worried about Mia's dad, but Mia can't tell Michael that it was all a lie because she doesn't want him to know she might have to cancel her date. Mia tells Lilly, who agrees that Grandmère is the worst. Mia skips french to comfort Tina after Dave dumps her. Mia devises a plan to salvage her date by compromising with Grandmère and asking if Michael can be her escort, however Grandmère tells her that René will be her escort.
Mia confides to Helen that she doesn't want to cancel her date because she doesn't want Michael to break up with her and Helen, still unable to reach Phillipe, suggests that Mia cat-on-the-roof him so as to let him down easier if she has to cancel. Mia tries this but cannot follow through and IMs Michael that she will definitely be able to make it. After realizing that Mr. G and Helen are also missing clothes Mia becomes concerned that their laundry was stolen and that her Queen Amidala underwear will end up on the cover of a magazine.
On Thursday, Tina decides to give up romance novels and Mia and Lilly have to talk about it. Helen is finally able to get in contact with Phillipe and he tells Mia she does not have to go to the Black and White Ball. Grandmère is distraught and explains that Contessa Trevanni used to bully her, so Mia agrees to go to the ball anyway.
On Friday morning, Mia tells Michael that she has to go to the ball and won't be able to make it to their date. Michael tells her he understands, but seems distant. Mia worries all day that he is going to break up with her when she goes to his house after the ball. In algebra, Lana tells Mia that just because Shameeka made the cheer team it doesn't mean anything is changing between them, swishing her hair all over Mia's desk. Mia slams her book shut with Lana's hair in it as Lana turns away, pulling out a great deal of hair. For once, Mia does not get in trouble and Lana is told to keep her hair to herself.
Paolo comes to the Plaza to get Mia ready for the ball. Grandmère tells Contessa Trevanni that René is Mia's boyfriend, which upsets her. Grandmère says she will stop, but she needs Mia to dance with René at least once, and blackmails her by revealing that she knows Mia stole something from the palace. While dancing Mia convinces René to dance with Bella Trevanni and René devises a way to get Mia out of the ball by pretending to be sick.
Mia shows up at the Moscovitzs' apartment in her ballgown, looking like a snowdrop, and Michael reveals that since she couldn't go to the Screening Room he has brought the Screening Room to her by ordering in dinner and setting up Star Wars in the TV room. Mia is shocked that Michael is not breaking up with her and confirms that he likes her as more than a friend. Mia gives Michael his birthday gift - moon rocks from Apollo 11 that she stole from palace museum. Michael is impressed and says he doesn't know how he will top it, and Mia says he can write her another song, in reference to Tall Drink of Water. Mia suggests that Michael name his band Skinner Box and Michael reveals that Mia's secret talent is writing. Mia's Queen Amidala underwear are returned when Ronnie comes back from her vacation and realizes she grabbed the Thermopolis' laundry by mistake.
Valentine Princess
Mia goes to princess lessons and there is a creepy guy there, who Grandmère introduces as Dr. Steve, her astrologist. Mia suspects he may be the Renaldo family's Rasputin, and Mia debates if she should tell Phillipe about Dr. Steve. Dr. Steve says Mia will end up with a Leo, which upsets her, as Michael is a Capricorn. Mia tells Tina about this, thinking it is funny, but Tina takes it very seriously.
On the way to school on Wednesday, Mia asks Lilly what she and Boris are doing for Valentine's Day, which is on Friday. Lilly and Mia each argue over the origin of Valentine's Day, with Michael ultimately butting in with the truth, that Romans used to celebrate Juno on the 14th and Lupercus on the 15th. When Mia asks Michael admits that he agrees with Lilly and doesn't believe in celebrating Valentine's Day.
Boris calls Mia into the supply closet during G&T to show her the Kay Jewelers pendant he got Lilly - the exact one that Tina wants. Grandmère cancels Mia's princess lessons for the day so that she can go with Dr. Steve for his appearance on Larry King. Mia asks Helen and Mr. Gianini what they are doing for Valentine's Day. Lilly IMs and tells Mia that Michael just isn't the Valentine's type.
On Thursday, Mia asks Mr. G if he's always felt the same way about Valentine's Day and he tells her he used to dislike it, but since meeting Mia's mom he has come around. Mia tells him about Michael. At lunch Judith Gershner comes to their table and reminds Michael that he has to submit his science fair application by fifth period to be entered, so he rushes off. Mia asks Judith what she is doing for Valentine's Day and she is surprised anyone still celebrates it, but says her and her boyfriend will probably get dinner somewhere, while she eats Michael's garlic bread, which Mia thinks is weird. Tina invites Mia to a Valentine's sleepover she is having with Lilly and Ling Su (Shameeka has a date, so she might not come).
When Mia gets to princess lessons, she finds out that Grandmère is missing with Dr. Steve, after a slew of television appearances that day. Mia is still unsure if she should call her dad, so she asks her mom what she would do if she thought one of her friends was making a bad decision and Helen automatically assumes that Lilly is doing drugs, so Mia lies and says Lilly is thinking about getting her nose pierced. Helen asks Mia what she and Michael are doing for Valentine's Day and Mia tells her everything. Helen tells her that just because Michael doesn't want to celebrate doesn't mean that Mia can't and that she should make him a card anyway.
On Valentine's Day, Helen gets up early to make Mia heart-shaped pancakes. Kenny gives Mia a Whitman Sampler and Mia remembers that Kenny is a Leo. Michael sits with Mia and she gives him her Valentine's gift - a handmade coupon book. Michael immediately tears out a kiss coupon and uses it. Inspired, Boris begins gives Lilly her gift, which she doesn't seem to appreciate and makes everyone uncomfortable. Mia attempts to be gracious and Lilly doesn't get it.
Mia agrees to go to Tina's sleepover, but Michael comes and tries to redeem a Dinner Date coupon for that night, as he was able to get reservations at One if by Land, Two if by Sea. Mia tells him that she already has plans and he feels bad because he's never had a girlfriend on Valentine's day and wasn't prepared. They decide to do something Saturday night for Lupercalia. At princess lessons Mia finds Grandmère in a cast. She tells Mia that Dr. Steve declared his love for her and tried to kiss her, so she tried to slap him and as she ran away she tripped over Rommel and broke her toe. Mia points out that Dr. Steve's predictions for Grandmère came true.
As Mia is preparing to leave for her sleepover Michael appears on her fire escape, having been let out there by Ronnie. He plays Tall Drink of Water for her, which is their song.
Project Princess
Mia wants to spend her spring break with her Gifted & Talented class building a houses with Housing for the Hopeful in Hominy Knob, West Virginia. Mia tells Helen that Grandmère thinks it's Helen's fault that Mia wants to go in the first place, which convinces her to let Mia go, out of spite. Mia IMs Michael that she can go, but admits to her diary that while she wants to help people she is more excited about the opportunity to make out with Michael away from their parents.
Mia has joined the school newspaper, The Atom, but thus far has only covered the cafeteria menu. After the informational meeting at lunch Mia becomes concerned that she is ill prepared for camping and the outdoors. At princess lessons, Grandmère is confused why Mia would want to go, as the place sounds like boot camp. She tries, to no prevail, to convince Mia to come with her to Palm Springs to relax. Mia begins to panic that she will be forced to wear a gunnysack and Michael calms her down, reminding her that they will get to make out while they are there, which make Mia happy as she thought he hadn't considered that possibility.
Phillipe tells Mia she has to take Lars on the trip, even though Tina does not have to take Wahim. After Boris throws up on the bus, Lilly, Mia, and Tina all squish together in one seat. They laugh about the sign the bus driver has that says "My name is Charlie. I am safe, courteous, and reliable. Please stay behind the yellow line." At the campsite, Mia is surprised that they have to camp with their tents on the ground, as the brochure had had tents on platforms. The girls tents are separate from the boys tents which Mia is concerned will make finding a place to make out with Michael more difficult. Mia's group for the week is herself, Michael, Lilly, Tina, Boris, Lars, Mrs. Hill, Dr. Gonzales, and Peter Tsu. Their host family is the Harmeyer Family.
Mrs. Harmeyer is surprised that a princess would want to spend her spring break building houses when she could go on a lavish vacation and Mia admits that while she wants to help she is also here to make out with Michael. Mia asks Mrs. Harmeyer if she knows what she's having and she says no, because if it's a boy she won't push. Surprised to hear another woman echo her mom's exact words she asks her if it is because of the patriarchy and Mrs. Harmeyer says it's because she wants to be able to buy Barbies instead of G.I. Joes for once. On the way back from dinner Michael pulls Mia behind a tree and starts kissing her before the smell of Boris' vomit in her hair stops him.
Mia wakes up the next day sore from sleeping on the ground, but thanks to the dew (which she has never experienced) she no longer smells like barf, though everything is soaked. At the work site Mia is bad at pretty much everything so she is relegated to holding up framing while the boys do most of the building. At the end of the day Mia is so exhausted she starts to fall asleep during Dr. Gonzales' speech at dinner.
On Monday, they continue the build, putting up gypsum board for the interior walls. Mia puts her hammer through the board a few times, but Mrs. Harmeyer tells her it's ok because she can put pictures over the holes (Michael assures her they will plaster them). Mia helps Lilly, Tina, and Peter shingle the roof. She falls off once, but lands on Boris. Michael volunteers himself and Mia to do inventory after dinner, and Mia thinks that they will finally get to make out. They find Mr. Wheeton and Mademoiselle Klein already making out in the supply tent and make Mia and Michael promise not to tell anyone. Michael begins inventorying and Mia is convinced that she smells so bad from not being able to shower that her boyfriend doesn't even want to make out with her.
Tuesday is the last work day and the crew finishes the house. Mia suggests that Mrs. Harmeyer may be in labor, as she complained of heartburn after breakfast as well and then again at lunch, and Mr. and Mrs. Harmeyer rush to the hospital. Dr. Gonzales compliments Mia on her powers of observation.
Everyone piles in to the truck and Michael drives them to town, but they are disappointed at how small "town" is, but Michael surprises them by taking them to Dairy Queen, which they do not have in Manhattan and everyone enjoys ice cream. Grandmère suddenly appears in Hominy Knob, having come to see Mia's work site. She offers the entire group the chance to shower at the hotel she is staying at. Showered, the group returns to camp for their final barbecue. Mrs. Harmeyer delivered a healthy baby girl, which she named Princess, after Mia. They gather around the campfire for s'mores and Michael sings Kum Ba Ya on the guitar, followed by Mia, Lilly, and Tina's rendition of Survivor by Destiny's Child. Michael puts his arm around Mia at the fire, and when he goes to put away his guitar they are able to find time to make out, at last.
The return to New York is smooth, as everyone is so tired they sleep for most of the ride home. After arriving back in New York everyone is happy that they have built new relationships with their peers, and Dr. Gonzales tells Mia that Grandmère is a "truly dynamic woman" and to tell her that he enjoyed meeting her. Mia gets to the loft and hugs everything she missed, especially Fat Louie and Helen. She tells Helen that the Wizard of Oz is right - there really is no place like home, even if you're a princess on spring break.
Princess in Pink
Shameeka passes notes with Mia and is concerned that Michael has not yet asked her to the prom, as it is less than 2 weeks away. Mia is bothered that Michael has not asked her, but she doesn't want to ruin the romance and ask him herself. Mia is also concerned that, while her father has allowed her to stay in New York through June when her baby sibling is due to be born, he still expects her to come to Genovia for all of July and August as she agreed to. Mia makes a list of what she wants for her birthday, including things like an end to world hunger, bungee cords for the palace, and for Michael to ask her to Prom. Grandmère agrees with Mia that she can not ask Michael to prom outright, but says she has to find the right incentive.
Mia has her 15th birthday and gets e-mails from her friends and admits her goal is to have a book published by the time she is 20. At school Shameeka tells Mia that Josh asked Lana to prom. The members of Skinner Box skip class to sing a new song, Princess of My Heart, to Mia during G&T. At dinner at Les Hautes Manger Mia gets gifts from her family and Michael, including a cell phone (her mom and Mr. G), a fountain pen (her dad), a bomb squad hat (Lars), and surprisingly Grandmère follows Mia's list and sponsors an orphan in Africa in Mia's name. Michael gives Mia a delicate snowflake necklace, to remember their first kiss at the Nondenominational Winter Dance. While Mia is in the bathroom she hears Grandmère screaming and comes out to find the restaurant in utter chaos as Rommel has escaped and been mistaken for a rat. She comes out just in time to see Rommel trip a busboy, Jangbu Panasa, who spills soup all over Grandmère. The busboy is immediately fired, even though Mia begs with Grandmère not to let them fire him as it is not his fault.
At school the next day, Lana shows Mia a new cover with Grandmère covered in soup and asks why her whole family is freaks. Mr. G tells Mia he thinks Michael is distracting her from her schoolwork after she gets a poor grade on a quiz. Shameeka is concerned that Michael didn't ask Mia to prom on her birthday, and Leslie Cho asks Mia to write a story for the Atom on the incident at the restaurant. At Princess Lessons Grandmère refuses to admit she has done anything wrong, so Mia dramatically turns on New York One, not really expecting to see anything but the weather, and finds coverage of the protest with Lilly and many busboys.
Tina IMs Mia that she has come up with a plan for Mia's party to play Seven Minutes in Heaven so that Mia can ask Michael about prom, which Mia objects to. She IMs Michael to hint at prom, but he does not get the hint. Mia decides to stay in bed and watch Lifetime Movies the morning of her party rather than go party supply shopping with Helen and Mr. G. Tina arrives for the party later and tells Mia her plan, ignoring Mia's objections. When the time comes Tina shoves Mia and Michael into the closet first. They find it awkward, but begin to make out before Mia pulls away to ask Michael about the prom. Michael tells her that he thinks prom is lame and would rather go bowling. Mia is upset but right as she begins to cry Tina rips the door open as time is up. Lilly rushes in, pulling Jangbu rather than Boris inside with her, which upsets Mia. She is shocked that Michael is not going to do anything about it. The next day, after Mr. G found Lilly and Jangbu in the closet, Helen decides to give Mia the sex talk, which makes her very uncomfortable. Phillipe calls to ask how the party went, and Mia is relieved that no one told him anything. Grandmère calls and can tell something is wrong and is annoyed that Michael is one of "those" people who thinks events are stupid.
On the way to school, Lilly staunchly ignores Mia's questions about Boris and talks about the strike. During G&T Boris confronts Lilly and (accidentally) drops a globe on his head. Mia rushes into action by taking off her sweater and applying it to his head while Michael talks to Boris in a calm voice. Mia believes she could have a career in medicine until Lars tells her that one would require good grades in math and sciences. Mia and Tina talk about the incident and Tina admits she finds it romantic.
Grandmère tells Mia that she has put a prom dress on hold at Chanel, and Mia tells her that she has not done as instructed. Grandmère tells Mia that she needs the right incentive (implying sex) but Mia misses this reference and decides to see if Skinner Box can play at prom. Mia urges Grandmère to confess to everything about Les Hautes Manger and Grandmère calls her ungrateful. Mia and Lilly IM and Mia tells Lilly that she is not being very sympathetic towards Boris, but Lilly believes that Boris acted manipulatively and she should stop watching so many Lifetime Movies. Mia says she'd rather watch movies than invent drama for them and that she has an article for the Atom now, but Lilly points out that that article is all because of her and that she is trying to solve real problems while Mia worries about things like prom and where she will have to spend her summer.
Mia's phone rings in class and it is the captain of the fire department calling to tell her that her mother passed out at Grand Union and was in the emergency room. Mia, Lars, and Mr. G rush to the ER where Helen was admitted due to dehydration. Michael shows up after Tina tells him that Mia left class suddenly and he finds out where they were by calling Phillipe. While at the hospital Mia tries to convince Michael to go to prom, to no avail, though he says he might go if they other guys from his band went. Mia is assigned a report on Asperger's and becomes convinced that she and everyone she knows has it and that AEHS is secretly a school for people with Asperger's, but Helen reminds Mia that a month prior she believed she had Tourettes when she had to do a report on it.
Mia writes a poem and anonymously submits it to the Atom where it is published alongside her article on Les Hautes Manger. Mia asks Lana, the head of the prom committee, if Skinner Box can play at prom, and she refuses instantly. At the Plaza everything is in disarray due to the strikes and Phillipe tells Mia not to blame herself. Mia tells him she blames Grandmère. Grandmère shows Mia the prom dress she has received from Chanel and it is a perfect pink beaded ballgown with an off the shoulder sweetheart neckline. Lilly appears on TV and reads Mia's article, admitting Rommel's presence at the restaurant, which infuriates Phillipe and Grandmère. Helen is on Mia's side, but says she should apologize to keep the peace.
Due to the strikes, Prom is cancelled and, as a result, Lana and the entire senior class blame Mia. Shameeka tells Mia that she believes Boris and Tina are now dating, so they skip 4th period to confront Tina about the situation. Due to the wrath of the senior class and multiple things being thrown at Mia she is sent home early. Lilly comes over later to cry after finding out about Boris and Tina and Mia tells her she is not allowed to interfere. Grandmère comes to stay at the loft as she cannot handle the conditions at the Plaza as a result of the strikes. Grandmère finds a place to hold prom and Mia goes to school the next day to tell Lana, on the condition that Skinner Box plays, which Lana accepts. Mia kisses Lana's forehead and runs to Michael's class (even though it is senior skip day he attended) to tell him. He agrees and Mia kisses him (in front of his teacher) embarrassing him.
The morning of prom Mia flees early to the Hakim Baba's house to get ready with Tina. Mia is happy to be at prom, even though she can't dance since the only music is when Michael is playing. Mia gets a phone call in the middle of prom that her mother has gone into labor and she rushes off to the hospital with Lars and Michael where Rocky Thermopolis-Gianini is born. Mia begs her dad to let her stay in New York for the summer, but he reminds her that she signed a contract. Michael tells Phillipe that minors are unable to legally enter into contracts if they are under the age of sixteen in the state of New York, which gives Mia hope.
Sophomore Year
Mia spends the first part of her summer before sophomore year helping Helen and Mr. G baby proof the apartment (meaning she and Michael baby proofed, as the lack of baby proofing didn't bother Helen and Mr. G. In the second half of the summer Mia goes to Genovia. While there she notices that there is a lot of toxic South American algae that has floated into the bay from Monaco. After reading on the internet about the algae and that it's only natural enemy is a type of sea snail found in South America as well Mia orders 10,000 Aplysia depilans and has them dumped into the Bay of Genovia to eat the toxic algae before flying back to New York.
Princess in Training
Before the start of school Mia receives her schedule and a letter from Principal Gupta to all the students. Lilly IMs Mia to complain about some of the content in the letter, which seems to be directed at her. Lilly makes fun of Mia for being over protective of Rocky. Mia is excited about the new school year, especially her new English teacher Ms. Martinez, who seems fun and who Mia thinks could really help her grow as a writer.
On the first day of school, Michael texts her good luck, but Lana makes fun of her lucky Queen Amidala underwear in the locker room before P.E. Mia is shocked to find Boris because somewhat hot over the summer and reassures Tina that he would never break up with her just because he is better looking now. In Mia's French class, she and Shameeka pass notes trying to guess if a new student, Perin is a boy or a girl. In line at lunch Lana approaches Mia to ask if she and Michael are still dating and then tells her that college boys expect their girlfriends to Do It. Mia begins to stress out over this comment and feels like she is having a heart attack. During the assembly at the end of the day Lilly nominates Mia for Student Council President. At princess lessons Mia is still bothered by Lana's comment, and Grandmère notices, but when she asks Mia only tells her about Lilly nominating her for Student Council President.
Mia asks Helen how old she was the first time she had sex and without thinking Helen answers that she was about fifteen, which immediately freaks both of them out as Mia is fifteen. Mia can't believe that her mom hasn't kept track of the guy she lost her virginity to, Wendell Jenkins, and looks him up online. In class the next day Mia tells Tina about what Lana said and about her mom and Wendell Jenkins. Tina tells Mia that she and Michael need to talk about sex if it is concerning her. Ms. Martinez gives Mia a B on her English assignment which greatly distresses her. At princess lessons Grandmère has Mia practice for a debate and Mia becomes surprisingly confident at the podium and enjoys herself. Mia decides to ask Helen's artist friends if what Lana said is true, and they confirm that it's not just college boys.
At school the next day, Mia sees large glossy posters of herself with pictures of her from her formal introduction to Genovia. She is upset that Lilly and Grandmère are in on this together when she does not even want to be Student Council President, but Lilly assures her that she won't be, but she also won't lose to Lana, which confuses her. In Geometry, Trisha mocks Mia and then is punished by Mr. Harding, and tells him that she won't get punished anymore when Lana is president. Harding asks for Mia's stance on the issue and she says she would rather focus on things that actually matter, getting some cheers from her fellow classmates. At lunch Tina reveals that Mia is going to be home alone for the weekend while Helen and Mr. G go to Indiana and Lilly proposes they have a party, which Mia shoots down, but Mia finds out that evening that she will be staying with Grandmère and her dad at the Plaza. Lilly is at Mia's princess lessons where a press conference has been set up covering Mia's student council election, which goes well until a reporter asks if Mia is concerned that Genovia may be removed from the EU, which causes Mia even more stress.
On Friday, Lana tells Mia that guys in college who's girlfriends won't Do It will dump them for a girl who will, and that if a guy doesn't Do It it backs up and drives them insane, both of which freak Mia out. Mia gets another B in English and as she is leaving class sees Grandmère in the hall handing out pens from the Genovian palace, to compete with Lana's pom pom squeeze balls. Mia freaks out and grabs the pens, throws them, and begins crying, so she is escorted to the nurse's office. Phillipe comes to her and asks if she's ok and she tells him about her English class, since she doesn't want to tell him about Michael, so he heads off to tell off Ms. Martinez. Helen also comes with Rocky and Mia smells Rocky's head, as it relaxes her. She asks her mom if she is going to look up Wendell Jenkins while she's in Versailles, and Helen says she isn't. After her parents leave Mia asks Nurse Lloyd if what Lana said about it backing up is true and Nurse Lloyd tells her it is not and recommends that Mia not let things get so bottled up.
Lilly was so worried about Mia that she stayed outside the nurse's office waiting for her. They go to the third floor stairwell to talk and Lilly tells her that her plan is for Mia to win the election and then step down so Lilly can be president. Mia asks why Lilly can't just run for herself and Lilly cries that she is not popular, so Mia gently explains that while she has friends she is sometimes mean, even if what she is saying is true - such as her calling Mia a baby-licker, POG, and PIT. Lilly agrees to just call her Mia and suggests they all have a slumber party at the plaza that night, which Mia agrees to. Grandmère takes Mia to an apology tea and gives Mia permission to host a slumber party. Mia has tons of fun taking quizzes and joking about their classmates and improving their List of Hottest Guys, but is completely exhausted the next day when Lilly drags her to an AEHS soccer game to campaign.
Mia goes over to Michael's afterward and he seems annoyed that Mia had her friends over to the hotel instead of him. Michael's roommate Doo Pak comes home and does not believe that Mia and Michael are dating, which Mia thinks is because Michael is too smart and she is weird, but turns out to be because Doo Pak thinks Mia is too pretty to be dating Michael. After seeing a box of condoms in the medicine cabinet, Mia blurts out when they return from dinner that she is not ready to have sex, which doesn't surprise Michael. Mia asks him about the condoms and he says they were given out at orientation, but even if he'd bought them she should be happy that he is concerned about her safety. Mia ends up telling Michael everything - about Lana and Wendell Jenkins and that she loves him, but isn't ready, and that sometimes condoms break, like on Friends. Michael tells her he isn't surprised that she's not ready, on account of the fact that she invited her girlfriends over when she found out she was going to have a hotel room all to herself instead of inviting him. Mia apologizes for not even thinking of inviting Michael over, but he asks her when she is going to be ready to have sex. Mia tries to steal Tina's idea of waiting until after prom at the Four Seasons hotel, which Michael immediately shoots down. She asks Michael if she has to decide right then or can take a rain check, and he says she doesn't have to decide, but also tells her that he won't wait around forever before Lars comes in and interrupts to take Mia home as it is after midnight.
Mia tries to wallow in bed all day, but Grandmère storms into her room at the Plaza to show her a pendant and tell her about he namesake, St. Amelie (though Mia is certain her mother named her after Amelia Earhart). Grandmère has Mia touch the rock inside the pendant, which she reveals to be St. Amelie's petrified heart. Helen and Mr. G return and Mia is surprised to find out Helen did not look up Wendell Jenkins while she was in Versailles, but she tells Mia that she's moved on and is with the man of her dreams now. Michael calls Mia and e-mails her multiple times, and Tina tells Mia to return his calls, but Mia doesn't.
On Monday, at school, Mia is worried about the debate that afternoon. Ms. Martinez stops Mia after class to tell her she didn't know Mia was upset about her grade, but that she should be writing about something more substantive than pop culture, which causes Mia to be late to French. Shameeka tells her that Mademoiselle Klein embarrassed Perin by assuming she was a boy, but it turns out Perin is a girl. Mia feels bad and wants to ask Perin to sit with them at lunch, however before that can happen Lana walks by as class lets out and says "HERMAPHRODITE" to Perin. Mia tells Lana off for it and Lana ends up ripping the patch off of Mia's blazer, so Mia pulls out a chunk of her hair (which turned out to be a clip-in extension) and Lars and Perin have to separate them before they are escorted to Principal Gupta's office. Principal Gupta chalks it up to nerves and takes them to the debate, where the whole school is waiting, along with Mia's whole family and Larry King, as well as a few other reporters. After Lana speaks Mia is nervous but stands up and removes the microphone from the podium, standing in front of it and begins to speak. She shuts down all of Lana's ideas and uses quotes from her U.S. Government class to critique the clique system in school and urge the students not to just vote for a pretty minority but to vote for whomever they resonate with the most. Principal Gupta tries to cut her off, but Mia continues with a thinly-veiled critique of Ms. Martinez. She ends her speech to massive applause, tosses the microphone to Principal Gupta and rushes out of the room.
Lilly drags Mia out of the bathroom and her family congratulates her, Helen saying she is proud of her and Grandmère comparing her to St. Amelie. Phillipe is pleased as well and tells her that the snails she dumped in the sea have started to rapidly eat the algae and he has already planned to order more for next year. Boris plays God Save The Queen at lunch and lots of students tell her they voted for her. At the end of the day Principal Gupta announces that Mia won the election, and she and her friends walk back to her locker singing We Are the Champions. Michael shows up and tells Mia they need to talk. He walks her to a pizza place and orders food for them and Lars, who sits on the other side of the restaurant. He tells Mia that he saw her debate on CNN and she did really well, and requests not to be present when Mia reveals she isn't going to step down to Lilly. Michael tells Mia that he just wants to know if they are ever going to Do It and Mia says that of course they will, and promises it will be by the end of the decade. Michael tells her that he knew dating her would be difficult, with her being younger and his sisters friend, and a princess, but he was ready for the challenge because he loves her. He tells her he won't push her into anything she isn't ready for but he is telling her now so that she will be ready since she takes some time to adjust to new things. They decide they will evaluate if they are ready to have sex every three months, and then leave with Lars to get gelato.
Before leaving for Winter Break, Mia tried to wear Christmas Baubles with Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman as earrings, but Principal Gupta told her they were against dress code and made her remove them.[4]
Princess Present
Mia spends her winter break in Genovia. After throwing a fit about missing Rocky's first Christmas Phillipe agrees to fly Michael and Lilly to Genovia for Christmas. Mia is bidding online for an original Star Wars poster to get Michael for Christmas, but she has to sell her Fiesta Giles action figure from Buffy the Vampire Slayer in order to afford it. Mia arranges for Michael to get the room with a balcony that adjoins to hers and tries to arrange with Antoine to have certain amenities in her guests' rooms, but fails. Mia finds a small cat outside her window and sneaks it some lobster from the kitchens.
Michael and Lilly arrive in Genovia, and although Lilly is a bit standoffish to Franco at first Mia explains to Lilly that Franco's job is to take her bags. Lilly complains about almost everything and tries to come to dinner in a rude t-shirt and low rise jeans, but Mia sends her back to her room with Franco to change. Mia is appalled by Lilly's rude comments to fellow guests at dinner. After dinner Michael climbs over to Mia's balcony so they can make out. They are joined by the cat from the night before and a few more cats, and although Michael is against feeding them Mia convinces him.
On Christmas Eve, Grandmère sends all the young royals out on a yacht where Mia offers everyone dramamine, but the royals all turn up their noses at her. After Pierre complains to Mia about Simon and Franco bothering Lilly, Mia talks to Lilly about it, but she assures Mia that they were both being helpful and that Pierre is a weasel. At Grandmère's ball that evening, Mia is too distracted by having to dance with Prince William in front of Michael to worry about Lilly, who sneaks off for a round of strip-bowling with some of the other royals. After Grandmère passes out due to the royals fighting over Lilly breaking the Faberge advent calendar, Michael helps carry her to the garden - which is full of cats that followed Mia's initial cat - and Grandmère screams at Mia.
At Christmas morning, most of the royals have left and the family opens presents, but Lilly is displeased with Mia's gift to her. To keep the whole family from hearing Lilly's screams she drags her down to the beach. Lilly and Mia fight as Lilly thinks that Mia is judgemental and bossy when she is in Genovia and Mia is upset that Lilly has acted inappropriately and that she has had to be bossy toward her. As they begin to resolve their fight, Mia realizes that the cruise ship that has been in the bay is sinking and helps to rescue the tourists. She brings the tourists back to the palace for lunch. Mia and Lilly give the gifts that they don't want to the tourists and Mia explains to Lilly that this is what being a princess is all about.
Michael and Mia go out into the garden alone to exchange their gifts. Mia gives Michael the poster and he tells her that he was actually the one selling it. She offers to exchange it, but Michael assures her he really wanted to keep it and was only selling it so he could get her something nice. Mia opens her present and it is the Military Xander action figure from Buffy that she was missing, and she tells Michael that she sold Fiesta Giles in order to afford the poster, so she no longer has the complete set. Michael laughs that they each sacrificed something they love to buy something for the person they love. They kiss, but Michael interrupts to say that Grandmère screaming about the cats was also a great gift, but Mia tells him to shut up and kiss her.
Party Princess
Mia writes letters to the late Carl Jung asking for help. She wants to achieve self-actualization by her 16th birthday, which is in a few months. Mia is the acting Student Council President, but Ling Su informs her that the student council is out of money, due to Mia's insistence at getting fancy recycling bins with separate compartments for paper, cans, and bottles with a built it crusher (though the stickers say Paper, Cans, & Battles). Mrs. Hill suggests they sell candles to cover the rental costs for the graduation space, but Mia doesn't want to sell candles.
Mia submitted a story called No More Corn! to Sixteen magazine. She returns home after the student council meeting to a rejection letter from the magazine that didn't even have her name on it. Lilly IMs and suggests that the school start a literary magazine that can both publish her and Mia's stories AND make up the cost of the graduation hall. Michael IMs and is also in favor of candles, but really wants to invite Mia to a party he is throwing at his parents house over the weekend while they are out of town, though he assures her they know about it. Mia does not want to go, but tells Michael that she will. She writes another letter to Carl Jung discussing her fears.
Most of Mia's friends support the idea of selling candles, but Mia is still very against it. Grandmère tells her that she has a solution - they will put on a show to raise back the money, which Mia is also not excited for. Most of Mia's friends ask for an invite to Grandmère's benefit, Aide de Ferme, so they can meet their celebrity heroes. Lana cryptically tells Mia that she "knows" and to meet her. Lana reveals that she knows the student council is broke and wants two tickets to Aide de Ferme in exchange for her silence. Mia agrees and at the last second asks Lana for advice on how to party, which Lana (though laughing) gives her. The school has posters everywhere for Grandmère's show, Braid!, and when Mia goes to princess lessons there are auditions taking place. Mia does not want to audition, but Grandmère forces her to. She auditions with The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn in the Chili, who is revealed to be J.P. Reynolds-Abernathy the Fourth, the son of Grandmère's rival. This causes Mia to believe that Grandmère has ulterior motives for putting on this show.
Though convinced that Lilly will get the part of Rosagunde Mia is surprised to be cast instead. She calls Grandmère to insist that Lilly get the part, but Grandmère blackmails her by threatening to tell Amber Cheeseman about their financial predicament. Lilly has decided to call her literary magazine Fat Louie's Pink Butthole, after Mia's cat, which upsets Mia. Mia invites J.P. to sit with them at lunch and discovers they are very similar, as he also keeps a notebook with him to write in. J.P. confides in Mia that he doesn't really want to be in the play, but he does so to impress his parents. After rehearsal J.P. jokingly tells Mia to make sure she eats her steak and bacon, revealing that he knows she is a vegetarian after a time she freaked out in the cafeteria when there was accidentally meat in the vegetarian lasagna, which makes Mia realize that all the times they were watching him he was also watching them. Mia stops Boris from calling J.P. the Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn in the Chili. Helen finds out about the musical and wants Mia to stop, but afraid of Grandmère and Amber Cheeseman, she convinces her mom that she really loves the play.
Mia goes to the Moscovitzs' apartment for a dystopian movie marathon for one of Michael's classes and makes a dip for his party the next night, which she is still nervous for. After a long, tiring day of rehearsals Mia gets ready for Michael's party. Following Lana's advice (somewhat) she wears dark tights, a black velvet skirt she cuts into a micromini, a water-bra, and a beret and red lipstick that she borrows from her mother. Michael and Lilly are shocked by her new look, but Mia tries to play it cool. She grabs a beer, which shocks everyone and then blows Michael off when he asks about it and goes to dance, though no one else is dancing. J.P. joins her and in thanks she somewhat shimmies up to him, but while they are dancing the Drs. Moscovitz return. Lilly asks Mia if her dance was supposed to be some sort of sexy dance. Michael follows his parents into their room and Mia, embarrassed, goes to sit on the couch. J.P. brings her her beer, but she tells him to take it away, grabs Lars, and leaves.
The next day, she sends bagels to the Moscovitzs' apartment as an apology and texts Michael 3 times, but all he sends back is "WE NEED 2 TALK," leading her to believe he is going to break up with her. Lilly keeps teasing Mia for her behavior at the party and J.P. asks if Mia is mad at him for getting her in trouble with Michael, but Mia assures him that she isn't. She asks J.P. what his issue is with corn and he tells her, which makes Mia regret letting Lilly take No More Corn! for her literary magazine, but Lilly refuses to take it out. The next day Mia sends Michael a large cookie with I'M SORRY written on it and she is frustrated that he hasn't gotten back to her. She snaps at her mom for not paying more attention to Rocky and Fat Louie. She asks Lilly again to take out No More Corn! but Lilly says no, so Mia refuses to help her assemble them.
After rehearsal, that afternoon Mia goes straight to Michael's dorm room. She apologizes to him for acting immature and doing the sexy dance, but explains she was really intimidated by being at a college party. She tells him it was unfair of him to give her the silent treatment for it. Michael agrees that she was immature, but tells her he wasn't giving her the silent treatment - his parents are separating and he was upset. Mia is shocked and asks if Lilly knows. Michael tells her they're waiting until after the musical and the literary magazine are done, but Mia thinks she may already know. Mia apologizes again for trying too hard to be a party girl. Michael tells her he never wanted a party girl, he just wants - but he is cut off by Doo Pak returning and a phone call from his mother, which he is forced to take. Mia leaves while he is on the phone and e-mails him from the limo on Lars' sidekick, telling him that she loves him and is sorry for everything.
Michael doesn't answer and Mia writes another letter to Carl Jung about how life is pointless. Lilly still refuses to pull No More Corn! from the literary magazine. Tina suggests that J.P. may have a crush on Mia, which Mia does not believe, but Lilly asks why they wouldn't think he has a crush on her, which leads Tina and Mia to think that Lilly likes J.P. Mia skips class with a few other cast members to rehearse before their dress rehearsal. Grandmère reveals at rehearsal that she intends for J.P. and Mia to kiss at the end of the musical, which Mia does not want to do, but Grandmère continues to blackmail her. J.P. tells her after rehearsal that they don't have to kiss if she does not want to so Mia kisses him on the cheek in thanks, which upsets Lilly. Lilly accuses Mia of liking J.P., but Mia says Lilly is the one that likes J.P. and she just likes J.P. as a friend. Lilly insists she also just likes J.P. as a friend, so Mia asks her why she won't pull No More Corn! from the magazine as she knows it will hurt him, but Lilly tells her that she won't be hurting him, Mia will.
Lilly IMs Mia later and tells her that she's leading J.P. on and they get in a fight. Mia writes another letter to Carl Jung. Lilly does not show up to get picked up by the limo in the morning. Mia and Lars plan to steal all the copies of Fat Louie's Pink Butthole and hide them so that J.P. doesn't read Mia's story and get hurt. They break into Lilly's locker and go to take the magazines to the men's room, but J.P. is there. He asks what they are doing and Mia reluctantly explains everything. J.P. offers to help and suggests using the crushers in the recycling bins to destroy them, but with everything else going on in Lilly's life Mia cannot bring herself to do it. She apologizes to J.P., knowing that her story will embarrass him, but he tells her it's ok because he's more of a loner anyway. Mia buys a copy of the magazine, but Principal Gupta comes in and has Mr. Wheeton collect all the copies of it, as Lilly included her own X-rated stories. Mr. Wheeton assures Mia that she will get her money back. Tina suggests to Mia that Lilly published No More Corn! to make Mia look bad to J.P. so she wouldn't lose him to her like she lost the election and the part of Rosagunde, which Mia thinks is crazy.
Mia skips class to get in extra practice time for Braid! before the performance that evening. She worries that she might actually like her kiss with J.P. The show goes off without a hitch, with the audience at Aide de Ferme seeming to enjoy it. As the last scene begins Mia sees not J.P. but Michael in the Gustav costume for the final kiss. Mia is thrilled that Lilly, J.P., and Michael schemed and found a way for Mia not to have to kiss J.P. Mia asks Michael to forgive her for the sexy dance, and he agrees as long as she forgives him for being absent, which she does. She meets J.P.'s father and he withdraws his bid on the faux-island of Genovia out of gratefulness to Mia for being nice to J.P. Grandmère gives Mia her check for the money for graduation. Amber tells Mia that she initially thought she was going to be a stick in the mud, but she turned out to be a real party girl. Lilly reveals that she has gotten to chat with lots of celebrities - including J.P.'s idol, David Mamet and Mia tells her to go grab J.P. and introduce him to him. Michael wraps his arms around her and asks her how she is, and she truthfully answers that she is good.
Sweet Sixteen Princess
Mia attends a PTA meeting, but gets a call from Lilly in the middle of it who tries to convince her to have a Sweet Sixteen, which Mia refuses. Mia gets off the phone and Principal Gupta (who avoided calling on her) finally addresses her. Mia proposes a change to the Physical Education program at AEHS away from sports knowledge and toward personal fitness goals. Principal Gupta rejects her proposal and ends the meeting. Michael IMs Mia and asks about her birthday, but she says she just wants something simple and romantic with only him - back to the good old days like that time they all went ice skating. Mia suggests that from now on they make each others' presents. Tina and Lilly group IM Mia to try to convince her to have a party, but Mia is adamant that she won't after what Lilly did at her party last year. Lilly tries to convince Mia that it won't happen because she is with J.P. now, but lets slip that he hasn't even called her his girlfriend yet. Mia and Tina become convinced that he is a volcano that is bubbling with passion, waiting for the right girl to unlock his heart and release it. As Lilly signs off she tells Mia that if she doesn't want a party she should make sure Grandmère knows that.
The next day, Mia asks Helen and Mr. G if Grandmère is planning a party for her and Helen says she hopes not. At school Mia tries to check if J.P. is bubbling with passion, but he catches her staring at him and thinks there is something on his face. Mia arrives at princess lessons and is surprised to find a film crew there. Grandmère tells her that she has arranged for her to be on a special episode of My Super Sweet Sixteen. Mia tries to argue with her but Grandmère refuses to hear it, so Mia runs from the room.
At school the next day, Mia tries to get a laugh from her friends by telling them what Grandmère planned, but they all seem somewhat disappointed that they will not get an all-expenses-paid trip to Genovia. J.P. however backs Mia up by agreeing with her that the show is exploitative and stupid. Lilly dramatically says that Mia is just punishing everyone for what she did last year and leaves for the bathroom. J.P. asks what happened last year but everyone, including Mia, refuses to tell him. Mia calls Michael to tell him about Grandmère and he agrees that her plan is stupid, but thinks that Mia should do something so that they people who love her can celebrate her and that she should forgive Lilly for what she did.
In G&T, Lilly is still upset and Mia tells her she's sorry that everything in Lilly's life is hard right now, but she doesn't want a Super Sweet Sixteen and Lilly needs to stop talking to Grandmère. Lilly insists that she hasn't been talking to Grandmère and she doesn't know what she needs to do for Mia to trust her again. Mia has an evil idea and tells Lilly that she will have to drink the fat and tell J.P. how she feels about him for Mia to trust her again. Lilly goes white and doesn't want to do it as it could jeopardize her relationship to tell J.P. that she loves him, but Mia insists. Mia carefully enters her princess lessons, but Grandmère tells her that the film crew is gone as Phillipe called her, so she arranged for Andy Milonakis to have a Royal Sweet Sixteen instead.
On her birthday, Mr. G makes pancakes and he, Helen, and Rocky watch as she opens presents. Michael confirms with her that she just wants a romantic dinner and agrees to pick her up at 6pm. Mia spends the day getting ready and watching TV movies, but before Michael gets there Helen and Mr. G take Rocky to a movie (which Mia finds odd as he is not even a year old). Michael shows up right at 6 and they go down to the limo where Hans begins driving without any instructions from Michael. The pull up to the Rockefeller ice rink which has a large wedding tent over it. Michael and Mia enter the tent and see all of Mia's friends and family (minus Grandmère). Phillipe tells Mia that for her birthday present he donated 20 stationary bikes to AEHS for Mia's physical education plan.
Lilly tells Mia that she told J.P. she loved him and Mia is shocked as she meant to stop Lilly before she actually drank the fight but didn't have a chance asks what he said. Lilly says "Thank You" and Mia says "You're welcome" but wants to know what he said, and Lilly tells her that that is what he said - he said thank you. Mia tries to reassure Lilly that he might just not be used to having a girlfriend and asks Michael what he thinks, but he is not reassuring. Mia is certain that everything will be ok with Lilly and J.P. Michael gives Mia her present - a Segway-like Human Transporter that he built himself. Mia sees all her friends skating as "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" plays and tells Michael that they should have the time of their lives, and they join the others skating.
Junior Year
Princess on the Brink
Mia has just returned from her summer in Genovia. She has begun writing a screenplay based on her life with hopes for Lilly to direct it and J.P. to help produce it. She goes with Rocky to his first hair cut and ends up getting her own hair cut, though it is very, very short. Tina suspects that Lilly and J.P. had sex over the summer, but Lilly refuses to tell Mia as she has a big mouth, which hurts her feelings. Mia tells Lilly she knows that Lilly touched Boris' Thing and asks her what it felt like. Lilly calls her juvenile but tells her it just felt like skin. Lilly plans to nominate Mia for student council again, even though Mia doesn't want to, and she ends up being the only person nominated. Mia tells Lilly she will run as long as Lilly promises to tell her if she and J.P. have had sex. J.P. hints that he likes Mia by telling her that he likes a certain tall skinny blonde, but Mia thinks he is referring to Kiera Knightley. Lana teases Mia's haircut by calling her Peter Pan. Ling Su asks what happened with Mia's hair, but unconvincingly tells her it looks good. Both J.P. and Kenny are in Mia's chemistry class so she suggests the three of them be lab partners together. Grandmère notices and hates Mia's hair, but realizes that there is no way to fix it as there isn't any left to cut off.
Mia hasn't seen Michael since she left for Genovia so they go to dinner at Number One Noodle Son where he tells her that the robotic arm he was working on over the summer shows a lot of promise and he has been offered the opportunity to move to Japan and work on it. Mia is excited for him until he explains that he would have to be gone for a year or more and would not be able to come back until the project is finished. Mia starts to freak out and excuses her self to the kitchen of Number One Noodle Son to think. When she returns she asks Michael what will happen with their relationship, but Michael assures her that he is going for them - so that he can prove himself worthy to her family. Mia cries and tells him she doesn't want him to prove himself and she's worried he will find someone else (who will have sex with him) and Michael jokes that that wouldn't be that bad. Mia cries back at the loft and Helen tries to comfort her.
Michael waits outside with Lilly to give Mia Starbucks and asks if they can do something that night, saying he'll pick her up at 7. Lilly tells Mia that if she through a big enough fit about Michael leaving he would probably stay, but Mia says she already tried that. Mia's friends are all sympathetic when they hear that Michael is leaving, except for Boris who argues that it is probably best if they break up as in the orchestra whenever anyone tries a long distance relationship one of the people inevitably ends up falling for a clarinetist. Boris doesn't think it is fair of Michael to ask Mia to wait for him - even if that's what he wants - because Mia is young and deserves the chance for other opportunities. Mia tells him that she would never want to date anyone who isn't Michael.
Phillipe is in town for a UN summit and asks Mia what's wrong. She tells him about Michael and he tells her it's good of Michael to want to prove himself before excusing himself to try to find Grandmère a new hotel as she has complained about her current one. Mia chastises Grandmère for not appreciating her suites when some people have no homes, but Grandmère ignores her and suggests to Mia that since her suite at the Ritz Carlton will be empty she could use it for a private romantic goodbye with Michael before he leaves for Japan. Mia does not realize until her date with Michael that evening, doing all the New York things before he leaves, that Grandmère was proposing that Mia have sex with Michael before he leaves. Mia decides that she will have sex with Michael in hopes that that will convince him to stay in New York and tells him not to make plans for the next night.
The next day, Mia talks through her plan with Tina, but Tina thinks that Mia should sleep with Michael as a romantic goodbye, not to try to manipulate him to stay. At lunch Lilly reveals that her campaign strategy is to scare everyone into voting for Mia using table toppers that talk about various disasters that could occur and saying that only Mia would know how to deal with them. Mia starts to have a panic attack during P.E. about her decision to have sex and ends up in the nurse's office where Nurse Lloyd gives her information about having sex. J.P. asks Mia in Chemistry if she is ok after going to the nurse's and she assures him she's fine. They talk about her problem with Michael and J.P. asks if she's really going to sit home while Michael is in Japan. Mia tells him that she will hang out with her friends, but he reminds her that all of her friends are in relationships.
Grandmère moves to the Four Seasons and Phillipe checks in on how Mia is doing. Grandmère cancels princess lessons so that she can unpack and get a facial so Mia goes to the Moscovitzs' apartment to meet up with Michael and they sneak out to the Ritz Carlton. They order room service and after dinner Mia asks Michael if he remembers the last time she had a hotel room to herself and she invited the girls over and not him. He tells her that he does and she notes that this time it's the same circumstances but she invited him. Mia tells Michael that she's given it a lot of thought and she's ready to have sex with him. Michael doesn't seem surprised but asks her if she's sure, which confuses Mia. Michael wants to make sure that Mia won't be upset if they have sex and then he leaves for Japan to make sure she won't feel like he's abandoning her. Mia lies and says that's not why she wants to have sex but she's surprised he would want to leave if regular sex was on the table but Michael tells her he has to go to prove himself to her family.
Mia tells Michael that before they leave she thinks that they should share the Precious Gifts of their Virginity with each other, but Michael asks her what she is talking about. Mia reiterates that they should give each other the Precious Gifts of their Virginity but Michael laughs and says he gave away his "precious gift" a long time ago, which shocks Mia. Mia asks Michael if he's a virgin and Michael says of course not and that she already knew that, but Mia yells back that she did not know. Michael starts to look alarmed and tells Mia that he knows they never talked about it but he didn't think it was a big deal but this makes Mia even more mad and she continues to yell. Michael tells her it was before he even knew that she liked him so he didn't think it would matter and Mia asks him who he slept with. Michael doesn't want to tell her as he's worried she'll get more angry, but he finally relents and tells her he slept with Judith Gershner. Mia freaks out even more, wondering if they were in love and if they used protection, but Michael says it shouldn't matter because she was dating Kenny at the time. Mia takes this as Michael blaming her for this, which he is not trying to do, but he brings up Josh Richter. This makes Mia even more angry and she yells at Michael for just expecting her to wait around while he's off in Japan and Michael gets really quiet and asks her what she means. Mia tells him that it's not fair of him to go off to Japan and expect her to just sit at home like a nun when she is only 16. Michael tells her that's not what he wants but he assumed she wouldn't want to see anyone else because he doesn't plan on dating anyone else, but asks her if that's what she really wants. Mia does not want this at all but can't stop herself from saying that if he could keep the fact that he slept with Judith from her then their relationship might not be as good as she thought. Michael yells at her that she never asked him but Mia continues that if he's willing to move to a whole other country then clearly the relationship never meant that much to him anyway. Michael shakes his head and tells Mia not to do this, but she takes off her snowflake necklace and holds it out to him. Michael angrily tells her not to do this, but she drops the snowflake necklace and runs from the room.
Mia take a cab, driven by Ephraim Kleinschmidt, back to the loft, crying the whole time. Mia enters her apartment where Helen is on the phone with Lars, who realized Mia was not at the Moscovitzs' place. Helen asks Mia where she was but Mia rushes to the bathroom and throws up. Mia tells Helen about Michael and Judith and Helen is nonplussed, telling Mia "it's just sex," but Mia says that Michael lied to her, which Helen says is only kind of true. Helen asks Mia if she picked a fight with Michael so that it would be easier for her when he leaves, since she will be mad at him. Michael calls to see if Mia got home ok, and Helen confirms that she did but won't let him talk to Mia. He e-mails Mia trying to explain why he didn't tell her about Judith and says he kind of expected her to wait for him since part of the reason he is going if for their relationship and he asks her to call him back. Tina texts Mia and Mia tells her everything, but Tina somewhat defends Michael, though she agrees that Mia has a right to be angry. Mia thinks about trying to message back Michael but keeps deleting it. She is concerned about being broken up but knows that they should stay strong.
Before school, Michael IMs Mia and tells her he'll be waiting with Lilly when she picks her up to talk to her but Mia calls Lilly and tells her she can't take her to school. Lilly tells Mia that she's breaking Michael's heart and she needs to talk to him. Mia doesn't want to go to school at all but Helen tells her she has to as she broke up with Michael, not the other way around, so she doesn't get to wallow. Tina and Mia pass notes in class and Tina asks her if she would forgive Michael if he asks, but Mia tells her that won't happen since Michael doesn't think he did anything wrong. Tina tells Mia that she felt the same way when she found out about Boris and Lilly but after a while the weird feeling went away and now they're fine, but Mia tells her she doesn't have that kind of time as Michael is leaving for Japan that night. Michael texts Mia and tells her he wants to come by so he can explain himself, but Mia doesn't understand.
At lunch, Mia shocks everyone by getting a cheeseburger. Lilly starts to berate Mia and tell her she has lost her mind, first by dumping Michael and then eating meat. J.P. tells Lilly to stop but she keeps going and says that Michael made the right choice by not telling Mia about Judith because he clearly knew she was going to blow it out of proportion. She says that Mia is just mad because Michael won't be her lapdog and stay in New York and do what she tells him to do because he is his own person. This causes J.P. to grab Lilly's arm and drag her outside to talk. Mia cries into her burger and Boris pats her on the shoulder and tells her she's doing the right thing.
In G&T, Mia sees Lilly crying next to Boris and asks him what he did. Boris says she was like this when he came in, so Mia asks Lilly what's wrong but she is reluctant to answer with Boris around which he picks up on and excuses himself to go practice. Lilly tells Mia that J.P. broke up with her because he didn't feel the same way about her that she did about him. Lilly begs Mia not to say anything to J.P. because she should have known sooner and he did the right thing by not taking advantage or dragging it out longer than it should have been. Mia tries to use this opportunity to find out if Lilly and J.P. had sex, but Lilly doesn't fall for it. Lilly apologizes for how she treated Mia in the cafeteria and Mia forgives her.
In chemistry, Kenny passes a note to Mia inviting her over to study. J.P. passes her a note saying he can't believe that she hasn't even been single for a whole day and people are already trying to get with her. Mia tells J.P. that she knows he broke up with Lilly, but he tells her that he knows he should have done it a long time ago but he was hoping that he would develop feelings for her, however when he saw how Lilly treated Mia at lunch he knew he couldn't be with her. He also tells Mia that he's proud of her for finally standing up for herself with Michael because it's wrong to lie about your sexual history. He asks Mia if they can still be friends, and Mia agrees, and he tells her that he is still a virgin. As they leave chemistry J.P. asks for a hug and Mia leans in, she decides to kiss him on the cheek but J.P. turns and the kiss on the lips. When Mia pulls away from their kiss, embarrassed, she sees Michael standing in the hallway. He turns and leaves, not responding when Mia calls his name. Mia gets sick and is rushed to the nurse's office where she throws up and is sent home for the day (to the Four Seasons as neither Helen nor Mr. G were at the loft).
Grandmère rants about Michael and says he must have done something truly heinous for Mia to have finally taken off her snowflake necklace. Mia tells Grandmère what happened and Grandmère mistakenly believes that Michael cheated on her, Mia clarifies that he lied about the Precious Gift of his Virginity, which confuses Grandmère as she does not believe virginity to be a gift. Grandmère tells Mia that she should thank Judith because no woman wants an inexperienced lover, but it probably doesn't matter anyway since Michael is leaving for Japan and they will probably never see each other again, which causes Mia to cry.
Phillipe comes in and is concerned to see Mia crying. Grandmère tells him that Michael and Mia broke up and she suggests they get Mia some bourbon, but Phillipe suggests tea instead. Through her sobs Mia tells Phillipe what happened. Phillipe listens and tells her he thinks she's making a mistake because true love doesn't come around that often and when it does it is foolish to just throw it away, and even more foolish to throw it away without a fight. He tells Mia that he once did this and it has been the biggest regret of his life, then leaves for his UN meeting. Tea arrives and Grandmère pours some for Mia, Mia asks her who Phillipe could have been referring to and she first suggests Eva Longoria, though Mia tells her that was just a tabloid rumor. Grandmère says that she does not know as the only woman Phillipe has ever mentioned more than once is Helen and that is only because of Mia.
Mia suddenly jumps up and grabs Lars and they rush out of the room. She tells Lars to call a cab and calls Lilly and asks her what airline Michael is flying on and what time his flight leaves and Lilly tells her. After she hangs up she calls Phillipe on his emergency line. She asks him if the woman he was talking about is her mother and he just says "Don't tell her." Before he hangs up Mia asks him if he ever used to smell Helen's neck because it smelled really good to him, and he is confused as he never told anyone that, but he tells her he did - and it smelled like freesias.
Lars finally gets a cab and they get in, only to realize that it is once again Ephraim Kleinschmidt's cab. He recognizes Mia and offers her tissues but she just tells him to drive to JFK. They hit quite a bit of traffic and Lars suggests that Mia simply call Michael but she reminds him that she kissed J.P. in the hallway and he probably wouldn't even answer. They get to the airport and rush inside just as Michael's plane takes off and Mia collapses to the floor and cries. Phillipe and Hans come to get her in the limo and they stop for a cheeseburger on the way to the loft.
Mia collapses on her bed and Helen comes in and tells her Phillipe filled her in about Mia being sent home from school and rushing to the airport. She tells Mia that she thinks she did the right thing, but Mia tells her she was too late and the plane had already taken off. Helen suggests she call him when he lands but Mia tells her that it's too late - Michael saw her kiss J.P. in the hallway and Helen asks Mia what she is going to do with her. Mia is concerned Michael will never want her back because she is crazy, but Helen tells her she has always been a bit crazy and Michael has still loved her. Helen tells Mia that they are ordering food from Number One Noodle Son and asks if she wants anything. She is surprised when Mia asks for a number of meat dishes, but orders them for her. As she leaves Helen tells Mia that Lilly called and she should call her back.
Mia calls the Moscovitz house and Mrs. Dr. Moscovitz answers the phone. She is noticeably displeased with Mia but tells her she could never hate her and assures her that she and Lilly will be fine. Mia assumes she must have meant Michael until Lilly gets on the line and begins screaming at her for kissing J.P. Mia tells her she just kissed J.P. as a friend but Lilly doesn't believe her and informs her that since Mia didn't show up Lilly gave the student council speech and was elected president. Mia pleads with Lilly that they've been friends for too long to let a guy come between them but Lilly says maybe that means they've been friends long enough and hang up. The phone rings again immediately and Mia answers and, assuming it's Lilly, begins apologizing but a man's voice comes on and Mia believes it to be Michael. J.P. identifies himself on the phone, to Mia's disappointment, and tells her that he has tickets to Beauty and the Beast and they should go to get away from their problems - both agreeing not to talk about either of the Moscovitzs. Before she leaves Mia e-mails Michael, saying simply "I'm sorry."
Princess Mia
Chesley McLaren, Perfect Princess: A Princess Diaries Book
Mia calls the loft in the middle of Beauty and the Beast to see if Michael has called yet, but Helen tells her he hasn't. Mia wakes her up again when she returns home and Helen affirms that he still has not called but gives her envelope with a DR on it and tells her to call Grandmère when she opens it. The letter is from Nancy Weinberger inviting Mia to speak at a Domina Rei event. Mia calls Grandmère and tries to get out of speaking, but Grandmère tells her it's important and hangs up before she can argue.
Mia IMs Tina and tells her she worried about her relationship with Michael and hopes they are able to get back together. Tina asks if Mia is going to Lilly's party, but Mia says she was not invited and Tina reveals that Lilly said she never wants to talk to Mia again for stealing her boyfriend. Tina tells Mia that she and J.P. were on the cover of the post, as a couple (even though they aren't one). Mia finds 500 similar articles and a website titled IHateMiaThermopolis.com that is exactly what the name implies. J.P. calls Mia to see if she saw the article and they laugh about it. He also asks Mia about Lilly's party as he was not invited either. J.P. offers to throw a party separate from Lilly's, but Mia turns him down, as she wants to wait at home in case Michael calls. J.P. is surprised Mia would want to sound available if he calls but offers to come over and study with her, which she turns down. Helen comes in and asks why Mia isn't going out for the night, but Mia tells her she wants to stay in and study which makes Helen think she is sick. She tells Mia that she can't let her break up ruin her life and Mia screams at her that she might not even be broken up with Michael yet as he still might take her back.
The next day, Tina IMs to see if Michael called but Mia tells her he hasn't. Tina tells Mia about Lilly's party and that Boris saw Lilly making out with one of Kenny's Muay Thai friends. J.P. calls and Mia tells him about Lilly's party and the Muay Thai fighter, which causes J.P. to laugh, though Mia is concerned about Lilly. Michael calls, having gotten Mia's e-mail and seen the article in the Post. He tells Mia that neither thing matters - after thinking about it the whole plane ride he thinks they would be better off as just friends. Not wanting for Michael to hear her cry Mia agrees before hanging up.
Mia stays in bed for the rest of Sunday and the whole of Monday, even though Helen tries to get her to go to school. Mia tells her she thinks she is really sick, but Helen calls her bluff so Mia begs her to let her stay in bed. Tina comes by after school and is shocked to see the state Mia is in. Tina tries to tell Mia that she is better off broken up, but Mia doesn't want to hear it so she lies to Tina that she will come to school the next day to get her to leave. On Tuesday, Mia remains in bed all day and Tina comes by again, with Boris, to bring her her homework. On Wednesday, Grandmère comes by and to get her to leave Mia agrees to speak at the Domina Rei event.
Phillipe comes Thursday morning and orders Mia to get out of bed. When she doesn't Lars picks her up and carries her to the car where she is driven to the office of Dr. Knutz, an adolescent and child psychologist. Mia is anxious to take the intake assessment. Mia is immediately bothered by Dr. Knutz's cowboy-like tendencies and asks to leave. Dr. Knutz points out that Mia checked "Most of the Time" or "All of the Time" for most of her answers on her assessment. Mia tells him she's been a little down because of her life, but insists she's fine but Dr. Knutz calls her bluff and notes that she has stopped going to school and hanging out with her friends, which are classic signs of adolescent depression. Mia admits she might be a little down and Dr. Knutz tells her it's ok to admit she's depressed so Mia says ok and begins to cry. Dr. Knutz encourages Mia to open up and tell her what's going on. Mia ends up telling Dr. Knutz (almost) everything (as Phillipe was still sitting in) that has been happening since her breakup. She recalls a time she visited her grandparents in Indiana and mistakenly fell in a cistern and how she feels like she's at the bottom of that hole again. Dr. Knutz tells her that sometimes when you fall in a hole you need someone to help you out, but they can't help unless they know you're down in the hole. Dr. Knutz sends Mia away from her consultation and tells her to get her blood work done before coming to her first real appointment the next day. Mia asks him to prescribe her drugs, but he says he can't, as he is not a psychiatrist, and even if he could he doesn't believe she needs them as she is not suicidal. Mia insists she cannot go to school without drugs but Dr. Knutz tells her that Eleanor Roosevelt said to do one thing every day that scares you and he encourages her to do the same.
As they leave the office, Phillipe tells her she can see another psychologist if she doesn't like Dr. Knutz, but Mia is too apathetic to object. She asks if Grandmère knows she is in therapy but Phillipe assures her the only people that know are him, Helen, Mr. G, and Lars. Mia gets an e-mail from Michael but deletes it rather than reply.
Mia goes to school the next day and is surprised to find that her uniform does not fit anymore. At school, Ling Su tells Mia she's sorry she can't sit with her at lunch and that she thinks she and J.P. are a cute couple, but Mia tells her they are not a couple. Lana and Trisha run into Mia in the locker room and Lana thanks Mia for agreeing to speak at Domina Rei and apologizes for their not getting along over the years. After noticing that Mia's clothes don't fit Lana invites Mia to come shopping with her and Trisha the next day, which Mia agrees to. J.P. tries to ask Mia out for the next night, but she turns him down.
At her appointment, Dr. Knutz asks Mia how her day of school went and Mia tells him about Lana to illustrate how bad it was, but Dr. Knutz thinks it is a good thing. Mia tells Dr. Knutz to watch the films based on her life to understand her relationship with Lana. Mia complains that the whole school thinks she's dating J.P.. Dr. Knutz asks Mia if she responded to Michael's e-mail and she tells him she didn't, as she didn't trust herself not to ask him to take her back, and Dr. Knutz agrees she made the right decision. Dr. Knutz asks if she plans to go shopping with Lana the next day and Mia says she does need new clothes and the idea definitely scares her, which Dr. Knutz says should give her her answer.
Tina asks Mia to go shopping the next day, but Mia turns her down as she has plans with Lana and Trisha. Tina instead asks her to spend the night, which Mia readily agrees to. Mia borrows a pair of her mother's jeans the next day to go shopping with Lana. She is surprised that she actually has a good time with them. Lana and Trisha ask if Mia is dating J.P. but she tells them she's not. She tells them that since her breakup with Michael, she just feels empty inside, which they don't think as weird. Lana tells her she felt the same way about Josh but she got over it and Mia will too.
Mia has all her purchases sent to the loft and when she returns from shopping her mother is furious with her. Helen call Phillipe, but Mia immediately tells him that she isn't taking any of it back. Phillipe tells her he's not angry, he's just yelling at her for Helen's sake so Mia pretends she has been yelled at. Helen tells her not to lose her old friends with her new ones, but Mia tells her not to worry and heads off to Tina's.
Mia and Tina trick Tina's siblings into going to bed early so they can marathon Drew Barrymore films. Boris and J.P. stop by to surprise them with ice cream and Mia is surprised she actually finds J.P. kind of hot but thinks that everyone suggesting it might be rubbing off on her. Boris and Tina begin to make out so Mia and J.P. excuse themselves to the kitchen. J.P. asks what Mia did that day and she ends up telling him about Lana and Domina Rei and mistakenly tell him she is in therapy, which makes her panic. J.P. tells her it's ok because most of the school is in therapy, including J.P.. Mia asks him if it works and he tells her it does so she asks how long it takes and J.P. just responds, "That bad, huh?" Mia tells him she's been a little down recently and he asks if it's about Michael and she just nods. J.P. puts his hand on hers and tells her it will get better. Mia begins to cry and tells him it's not just Michael - it's everything with Lilly - and J.P. hugs her and tells her it will be ok. Mia cries that Lilly won't even look at her and J.P. tells her that maybe it's a sign that Lilly wasn't as good of a friend as Mia thought and that while they were dating she told him she was jealous of Mia for being popular and well-liked, in addition to a princess. Mia tells J.P. that the whole school just sees her as a freak, but J.P. says they might have seen her like that previously, but she's changed and Lilly hasn't. Mia doesn't think she's changed but J.P. points out that she eats meat and hangs out with Lana. He is about to tell her something when Tina's parents come back and Tina rushes the boys out before they get to the apartment.
The next day, Grandmère takes Mia to the Genovian Embassy Archive room to get inspiration for her Domina Rei speech. Grandmère wants her to look at writings from Grandpère, but Mia becomes interested in a portrait of Princess Amelie. Mia asks about Amelie and is told that she was a teenager who reigned for only 12 days during the bubonic plague. Mia asks for her writings but is told she kept only a journal, which Grandmère does not want her to look at. Mia calls Phillipe when she leaves the embassy and he has the translation of Amelie's journal and her portrait sent to the loft. Lana IMs Mia and tells her she hopes Mia had fun at Tina's and tells her that she and Trisha saw Lilly making out with a ninja. Michael e-mails again and updates Mia on his life, but Mia deletes his e-mail.
Mia's new uniform arrives and she is able to comfortably head to school. At lunch Lana and Trish join Mia, J.P., Tina, and Boris. Lilly shoots the group a dirty look while Lana puts mini barrettes in Mia's hair. Principal Gupta takes away Mia's journal after she is caught writing in it during class. Tina passes notes with Mia and asks her how and when she and Lana became friends and Mia explains about Domina Rei. Mia runs into Lilly in the bathroom but they don't say a word to each other. When Mia goes to retrieve her diary at the end of the day Principal Gupta tells Mia she is concerned that she has stopped talking to Lilly and is not participating in extracurriculars. Mia reminds Principal Gupta that it doesn't matter if she takes any extracurriculars because she is a princess and will get into college anywhere she applies. Grandmère calls from outside the school to take Mia to her fitting at Chanel for Domina Rei.
The next day at lunch, Lana asks how long Lilly and Kenny have been dating, and Mia and Tina are shocked, but Lana tells them that she saw Lilly and Kenny making out that night and Boris confirms it could have been Kenny he saw at Lilly's party. In chemistry Mia asks Kenny if it's true, but he changes the subject. J.P. begins talking to Mia and tells her that he loves her and his feelings came on slowly but he can't stand watching her so sad about Michael before Kenny interrupts yelling for everyone to get down and blows up the chemistry lab. J.P. throws himself over Mia and Lars grabs a fire extinguisher while the whole school evacuates and Mia, J.P., and Kenny are sent to the hospital. Kenny is suspended for knowingly creating an explosive.
Tina IMs Mia to make sure she is ok, but Mia tells her that J.P. told her he loves her. Tina jokes that J.P.'s eruption of love was what caused the explosion in the lab. She asks if Mia told J.P. she loved him back but Mia says she didn't because she still loves Michael. Tina asks what Mia is going to do about senior prom as she will need someone to go with and Michael clearly isn't going to. Tina tells Mia she's sorry that Michael left, but Mia will learn to love again and Mia asks her if she thinks Michael is ever going to get back together with her. Tina doesn't answer the question but asks her if she will even want to get back together with Michael or if she will have moved on to someone better by then. Mia says there is no one better than Michael but Tina points out she doesn't know that for sure. Tina reveals to Mia that IHateMiaThermopolis.com exists, but Mia already knew about it. Mia looks again and there are many, many more posts and she begins to cry, so she says goodbye to Tina.
Mia e-mails J.P. and tells him that she just isn't ready to date anyone, but if she was it would be him. He e-mails back that he will wait for her to be ready. Michael e-mails Mia about the explosion, joking about Kenny, but Mia deletes it. Tina asks Mia if she's decided what to do about J.P. but Mia tells her she hasn't. Lana and Trisha get Mia to skip class so they can get Starbucks and they ask if she is dating J.P. now that he's saved her life. She tells them she still isn't ready, but they encourage her to use J.P. as a rebound guy.
Mia reads Amelie's journal a learns about her brief rule. Mia accidentally knocks Amelie's portrait over in her room and the back comes off, revealing the executive order Amelie drafted and Mia begins to translate it. It reveals that Amelie granted the Genovian people the right to elect a prime minister, turning Genovia from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy. Mia shows the document to Phillipe and Grandmère but Grandmère freaks out that they will no longer be royal, which Mia explains is not the case as they will still be ceremonial royals like in England. Phillipe agrees that the document made sense for the time and Mia encourages him to run for prime minister, but he tells her that the document is invalid as it did not get parliamentary approval. Mia is upset that Phillipe wants to hide the document, but Phillip insists that Genovia is happy and the document will just upset everything. Mia tells him that isn't the point - the point is that Amelie left a legacy and Phillipe is willing to throw it away the same way Francesco was, but Phillipe leaves and Grandmère tells Mia she never should have bothered with Amelie's journal.
At school Mia goes up to Lilly to ask her for help with the Amelie situation but Lilly asks Mia why she is even talking to her. Mia tells her again that she needs her help but Lilly interrupts her by yelling "Oh. My. God!" and slamming her fist on the table. Lilly yells at Mia for breaking Michael's heart, stealing her boyfriend, and then having the audacity to ask Lilly for help with her dysfunctional family. Mia tries to explain but Lilly screams at her for always playing the victim and never taking responsibility for anything. She accuses Lana and the rest of Mia's friends of using her, saying that she was Mia's only real friend and she treated her badly. Lilly screams that Michael couldn't wait to get away from her and admits to running IHateMiaThermopolis.com before storming out of the cafeteria.
Mia's friends all surround her and assure her that what Lilly said is not true, but Mia goes off to the 3rd floor stairwell to cry, skipping G&T. Boris comes after her and tells her he's been looking everywhere for her and that what Lilly said isn't true - Michael did not break up with her because he was sick of her and he knows it, though he can't tell her how he knows. Mia thanks Boris for being sweet but he tells her he's not being sweet, he's telling the truth and she should e-mail Michael back. Mia asks if Tina told him she hadn't e-mailed Michael and Boris hesitates before saying she did. Mia says she isn't ready to e-mail Michael back yet and Boris tells her that's ok but she needs to as soon as she thinks she's ready so Michael doesn't think she hates him. Boris walks Mia back to G&T and makes sure she is ok before slipping into the supply closet to practice.
Mia skips class again to get Mani-Pedi's with Lana and Trisha in a color she knows Grandmère will hate. Mia tells Dr. Knutz about Princess Amelie's executive order and her father ignoring it, but he is confused as the films based on Mia's life indicate that Genovia is already a constitutional monarchy, but Mia tells him that is just one of many things the films got wrong. Dr. Knutz tells Mia about a horse on his ranch named Pancho that is a pushover and lets all the other horses push him around, Mia tells him she already knows she's insecure but doesn't understand how it relates to Amelie and her father. Dr. Knutz points out that Mia doesn't fight back - she isn't with her father, she didn't when Lilly stopped being friends with her, and she didn't when Michael told her he wanted to be just friends. Dr. Knutz tells Mia that nothing is going to change for her until she starts doing something every day that scares her and Mia tells him she knows this but she doesn't know what she's supposed to do. Dr. Knutz tells her it's not about what she's supposed to do it's about what she wants to do. Mia tells him she wants to do the right thing and Dr. Knutz tells her to be more like Amelie and less like Pancho. Before Mia leaves he tells her to bring Phillipe and Grandmère to her next session.
Mia goes to Grandmère's to get ready for Domina Rei, and Grandmère is upset about her nail polish and her insistence on talking about Amelie. Mia meets Nancy Weinberger at Domina Rei, but Lana drags her away to a chocolate fountain to look at the boys that are serving. Mia goes to give her speech but decides to tell Amelie's story and reveal her document. Grandmère cries hysterically, which everyone mistakes for passion. After the speech Phillipe spends a half hour yelling at Mia for ruining all of their lives. Mia shuts him up by telling him he can discuss it next week in therapy with her and Grandmère. Mia calls Phillipe out for checking that he only feels love has passed him by "a little of the time" on his assessment when he recently admitted to her that he was in love with Helen and lost out. Phillipe explains to her that he doesn't spend time pining over Helen, he just occasionally wishes it had worked out between them and someday Mia will feel the same way about Michael, as true love might be waiting just around the corner.
Mia returns to the loft and J.P. is waiting outside for her as he saw her speech and wanted to make sure she was ok. He apologizes for stalking her and it starts to snow and suddenly Mia doesn't feel as depressed anymore. Mia interrupts J.P. by throwing her arms around him and kissing him. J.P. asks Mia if he can see her the next day and Mia says yes and goes inside. She checks her computer and has a congratulatory e-mail from Tina and an e-mail from Michael saying he watched her speech. For the first time in a long time Mia laughs at something Michael has written and instead of deleting this e-mail she writes him back.
Senior Year
Mia gives an interview to teenSTYLE magazine. She got in to every college she applies to, though she lies to her friends and tells them she didn't get in anywhere as she feels bad when most of them do not get into their first choice. Grandmère is throwing Mia an extravagant 18th birthday
Mia and Lilly are still not friends, but they are civil to each other as Lilly is the editor of the Atom and Mia is on staff. Mia has become good friends wish Lana and Trisha, and Lana takes Mia and Tina to a sex boutique to educate them. Mia and J.P. have continued dating, and all of her friends seem to like him except Boris and her mother. Helen and Mia fight at one point when Helen points out that J.P. is a chameleon who likes or dislikes all the same things Mia does, which necessitates an emergency session with Dr. Knutz. Mia has continued her appointments with Dr. Knutz, though she plans to conclude with him before graduation. Her friends all know about her therapy.
At Dr. Knutz's urging to find something to do to prove herself, Mia spends all of her junior and senior year writing a romance novel titled Ransom My Heart as her senior project. Due to the intense research phase she spends all of her time on her book instead of writing in her journal. She sends it out to get published under the name Daphne Delacroix, but she receives numerous rejections. Not wanting her friends to know she tells them that her project is about Genovian olive oil pressing circa, but Michael still asks to read it. She and Michael e-mail back and forth casually a few times a month, but after he asks to read her senior project she stops responding to him.
Forever Princess
Lana invites Mia to go prom dress shopping, but Mia turns her down, lying that she has to help J.P. with his play. Tina texts her and calls her out on lying, knowing she isn't allowed at J.P.'s rehearsals, and Mia tells her she might not be going to prom as J.P. has not asked her. Tina hints that they are supposed to have special prom nights and Mia is surprised Tina still believes that as she now thinks prom is lame and doesn't plan to have sex after prom night. Mia promises Tina she'll talk to J.P. about prom and she ends up going with the group to go dress shopping. J.P. calls later and asks if Mia got a dress, and Mia tells him she didn't as she didn't know they were going. J.P. tells her he has had tickets for weeks but Mia points out that he never asked her. J.P. tells her he didn't know he needed to ask but assures her he will. Mia makes a last ditch effort to get out of it by telling him she thinks prom is lame, but J.P. really wants to go. Mia loves J.P., but she admits to herself that she loves him in a different way than she loved Michael.
Helen asks Mia why they are suddenly getting mail for a Daphne Delacroix and Mia tells her she sent her book out under a fake name. Helen tells Mia that her father is calling after dinner. Phillipe gives Mia until graduation/election day to choose a college. He also has Mia look at a press release which informs her that Michael is back in New York and his CardioArm is a massive success and he is donating one to Columbia over the weekend, which Phillipe wanted Mia to know before the paparazzi asked her about it. Mia is happy that Michael is successful, but alarmed that he is back in New York and surprised that he didn't tell her. Mia skips her meeting of the Atom to avoid Lilly assigning her the CardioArm story.
Tina texts Mia at school to meet her in the stairwell where she warns her that Michael is back, but Mia tells her she already knew. Tina tells their friends about Michael at lunch and Lana decides that they should go to the donation ceremony to see Michael and steals press passes from her sister, though Mia asks them not to. Mia forbids them from talking about Michael in front of J.P. and J.P. returns to the table and asks what they are getting the teachers who wrote them letters of recommendation. Mia tells them she is getting all her teachers a set of hand blown Genovian crystal water goblets with the Royal Genovian Crest on them. Tina asks Mia repeatedly what she is going to wear to the CardioArm donation, but Mia tells her she is not going.
Mia shows up to her second to last therapy session and Grandmère is waiting for her in the lobby. Mia tells her that she will not dis-invite her friends and parents from her birthday, as Grandmère has been texting her about that, but Grandmère tells her the party is taken care of. Grandmère tells Mia she should ask Michael to bump Genovia to the top of the list for a CardioArm to help Phillipe in the polls, which appalls Mia. She tells Grandmère to leave and goes into her therapy appointment. Mia asks Dr. Knutz for advice on what to do about J.P., prom, choosing a college, and Michael. Dr. Knutz tells Mia about a horse named Sugar who seemed good on paper but was never a good fit, but Mia doesn't understand what that is supposed to teach her.
Chesley McLaren, Princess Lessons: A Princess Diaries Book
J.P. invites Mia out for sushi but spends the whole date complaining about his lead actress Stacey Cheeseman. The paparazzi shows up as they walk home, as they tend to show up everywhere that Mia and J.P. go, and asks Mia how she feels about her dad losing in the polls and tell her it's her fault. Lars gets them a cab so they can shake off the paps before returning home. J.P. asks to come up to the loft, but Mia is distracted by the paparazzi's comments about Phillipe and decides she should take Grandmère's advice and ask Michael for help.
Mia arrives at the CardioArm event wearing a beret and large sunglasses and immediately realizes it was a mistake. Michael comes out on stage and Mia realizes that there is a part of her that still wishes she and Michael had never broken up. Midori comes out in a microdress and gives Michael a hug and Mia decides they should leave. She goes to the bathroom to wait while the other girls slowly sneak out, but she runs into Lilly there. Mia tells Lilly she is just covering the story for Gretchen and is trying to stay out of her family's way. Lilly questions Mia's story, but finding no holes tells her she has to get a quote and drags her by the wrist to see Michael. Mia and Lilly pass Lars and Tina but Mia signals to them not to do anything.
Michael turns to Mia and she melts a bit and is unable to answer him. Lilly pinches her and Mia is finally able to speak, telling Michael she is well and asking how he is. Mrs. Dr. Moscovitz interrupts that there is a reporter waiting for Michael from the Times and Mia insists he goes, but Lilly suggests they meet up for a private interview and Michael agrees. They decide on meeting the next day and Michael tells Mia to bring her senior project so he can finally read it. After Michael leaves Lilly asks Mia if she is ok and Mia asks Lilly why she is being so nice all of a sudden. Lilly starts to answer, but Kenny interrupts to ask if Mia is still dating J.P. and when she confirms that she is Kenny steers Lilly away. Mia goes out to the limo and tells the girls everything that happened.
Realizing she can't hide the true nature of her senior project anymore, Mia e-mails Tina and J.P. confessing her lie and attaches a copy of her book. Tina immediately texts her and is excited for her, but J.P. calls and is a bit judgemental, believing Mia is selling herself short by writing romance.
Mia is woken up the next day by Rocky jumping on her, having been let in by Mamaw and Papaw, but Helen ushers them out. Lana texts Mia advice on what to wear for her interview. Mia gets to the cafe early to get rid of any paparazzi but is surprised to find there are none. Mia records her interview with Michael and he embarrasses her by telling her she is the reason he invented the CardioArm and the thing he missed most about the U.S.. Michael thanks Mia for the invites to her birthday party and Mia realizes that Grandmère invited the entire Moscovitz family. Michael asks to read Mia's project and she admits it is a romance novel, which only makes him want to read it more. Mia sends it to him, but he opens it and laughs at her pen name so Mia tells him to delete it. They wrestle over his phone and she ends up spilling hot chocolate on him. Mia extends her hand to shake after the interview, but Michael goes in for a hug and Mia accidentally smells his neck and all her feelings for him come back.
Mia sits in the park to collect her thoughts after the interview and when she plays back her tape she realizes that Michael is flirting with her. Grandmère calls and Mia is upset with her for inviting Michael to her party. Tina calls while Mia is on the phone with Grandmère so Mia ends her call to answer Tina's. Mia tells Tina about her meeting with Michael and smelling his neck, but Tina is confused. Tina asks if Michael smelled better than J.P. and Mia admits that he did. Tina tells Mia she has to talk to her about her book and agrees to meet her at the zoo when Mia is there with her family.
Mia, Mamaw, Papaw, Helen, Mr. G, and Rocky go to the zoo. Mia breaks away to meet with Tina. Mia asks if Tina thinks her book was terrible, but Tina assures her she loved it. Tina asks Mia if she and J.P. have had sex but before she can answer Tina admits that she and Boris have. Tina asks if Mia thinks she is a slut for not waiting until prom night, but Mia tells her she doesn't think she's a slut. Tina asks if Mia's book is about her and Michael as there is a knight who returns from a long time away and a girl who has an obligation to her people, but Mia is shocked as she did not intend this at all. Tina tries to ask again if Mia and J.P. have had sex, but they are interrupted by Mia's family.
Mamaw and Papaw tell Mia they want to go to dinner at Applebees, which worries Mia as her fathers campaign will be in trouble if the paparazzi catch her at a chain restaurant. J.P. calls while Mia is there and she begs him to join her, but he refuses, wanting to work on his play. J.P. has not yet read her book, but due to Tina's thoughts Mia worries all night about Michael and J.P. reading it.
Mia wakes up the morning of her birthday and realizes that at 18 and that she and J.P. are probably the last virgins at AEHS. Helen and Mr. G make Mia heart shaped waffles for breakfast and Helen gives her a collage of items from her upbringing so she will not feel homesick at college. Phillipe calls and reminds Mia that her allowance as a royal begins now that she is 18 and tells her how proud he is of her and how much she's grown since he first told her she was a princess.
Mia gets to school early and turns in her article to Lilly, who surprises her by wishing her a happy birthday. She thanks Mia for the invite to her birthday and hopes it won't be weird if she and Kenny attend, but Mia tells her it won't. Lilly tells Mia that there is something she wants to give her for her birthday, but she can only do that if she goes to the party, which alarms Mia as she thinks Lilly might be planning some sort of sabotage. Mia tries to tell Lilly she doesn't have to get her anything, but Lilly tells her she doesn't want to fight anymore. She gives Mia an envelope from Michael that contains a note telling her he loved her book and a back-up copy of her manuscript on a Hoth Leia flash drive as a birthday present. Perin and Ling Su wish Mia a happy birthday before running off giggling. J.P. wishes Mia a happy birthday and tells her he will give her her gift at the party and he hasn't forgotten about prom.
Principal Gupta calls Mia to the office for a family emergency, but it is a ruse by Grandmère to surprise Mia with mani-pedis with her friends. Tina hints about telling the group about Mia's book, but Mia misunderstands and blurts out that she is a virgin. Her friends surprise her by being more impressed by the book than they are surprised by her virginity. Tina asks if Mia even wants to sleep with J.P. and mentions what she said happened with Michael. Mia tells her that just because she thinks Michael smells better doesn't mean she is still in love with him, but her friends all seem to disagree.
Mia wears a fitted, sparkly silver dress for her party and watches her guests arrive. Phillipe surprises Mia by flying in for her party and presents her with Princess Amelie's formerly-lost tiara. Angelina Jolie presents Mia with her official invitation to join Domina Rei. Mia sees Lilly filming the celebrities at the party, which is not allowed, but tells security to let her do it. Tina brings Mia food and tells her she has to eat something. Kenny, Lilly, and Michael approach her and congratulate her on a great party. J.P. joins the group, which becomes very tense, so Mia excuses herself to mingle, but J.P. pulls her up on stage. He gives a speech about how much he loves her and gets down on one knee, presenting her with a ring, to ask her to prom she blushes and tells him "we'll see!". Mia sees Michael leave the boat and is heartbroken. J.P. hugs Mia and tells her the diamond is conflict free but Mia is confused why he would think that she would want one in the first place. J.P. says that Tina wanted one and she likes romance novels and Mia wrote a romance novel, so he assumed she would want one too, but tells her if it freaks her out she can think of it as a birthday present and reminds her that unlike Michael he is not leaving.
Mia goes to the front of the boat to write in her diary, but Phillipe follows her. He tells Mia that she can't sulk just because her ex is back in town and she should go to prom with J.P. unless he has done something wrong to warrant a breakup. Phillipe tells Mia she can't get engaged, but she tells him it is a promise ring and accidentally reveals she wrote a romance novel. Mia puts J.P.'s ring on and tell him she will go to prom with him and her friends all surround her to look at her ring. Lilly asks if they are engaged, but Mia tells her it is just a promise ring, which Lilly insultingly says is a big promise.
Tina pulls Mia aside and asks if Mia thinks Michael left because he is still in love with her, but Mia tells her she thinks it is because he doesn't love her at all anymore. Tina insists that is not true, but Mia asks her not to talk to her about Michael anymore. After the party Helen lectures Mia on feminism.
At school, everyone asks to see Mia's ring an she snags it on a bunch of things. Per Mia's request not to talk about Michael, Tina avoids talking to Mia all day. Mia drags her into the bathroom and asks her what her problem is, but Tina insists she has no problem. Mia says that Tina thinks she still has feelings for Michael but she doesn't and to prove it she texts J.P. get to a hotel room so she can lose her virginity to him after prom. Lilly comes out of the bathroom stall but doesn't say anything and just washes her hands and leaves, and Tina assures Mia that Lilly will not say anything, but Mia is not sure. J.P. texts Mia back that the room is taken care of and he loves her.
When Mia gets home from school, she has another rejection letter for her book and Helen is on the floor sorting college acceptance letters. Helen tells Mia she has to pick a school and can't just get an MRS degree, but Mia shouts to remind her it's only a promise ring. Mia goes and finds which schools don't require an SAT score to get in and gives it to Helen as her short-list. JP IMs Mia and asks how finals went and tells her he’s worried about his Senior Project performance the next day, but Mia tells JP it will be fine. Mia secretly stresses out that they aren’t (and never do) talking about sex. Tina IMs Mia to tell her that she’s making a big decision and she doesn’t want to make a mistake, but Mia points out that she and JP have been together for a long time and unlike Michael he hasn’t broken up with her. Tina still thinks Michael might love her but Mia tells her that he has her number and her phone isn’t ringing, which signifies that he doesn’t care about her anymore.
Grandmère calls and wants to know if Mia has a prom dress yet but Mia tells her she doesn’t so she arranges for Sebastiano to make one for her. Grandmère tells Mia she should have given JP the speech she made her learn to turn him down, but Mia tells her it was only a promise ring. Grandmère reveals that Phillipe told her Mia wrote a romance novel but Mia tells her not to worry as no one will publish it, and they fight.
Phillipe calls Mia in the middle of lunch the next day to tell her that the Royal Genovian Hospital received a free CardioArm, courtesy of Michael but Mia tells him she didn't ask for a donation and Phillipe assures her that he and Grandmère did not either. Phillipe tells Mia he thinks there’s a reason Michael sent the CardioArm thank him over dinner, but Mia doesn’t think that Michael sent the arm because of feelings for her. Mia knows that the donation of the CardioArm will get major press coverage in Genovia.
Mia reads a few potential texts to Michael to Lars before sending one and Michael texts back and wants to get together. He admits that he only sent the CardioArm because it would help Phillipe which would in turn make Mia happy and asks if they can meet that night, but Mia has J.P.’s play and doesn't respond. Mia asks Grandmère if she should break up with JP and date Michael but Grandmère tells her she should sleep with both and stay with whoever is better in bed. Mia waits until she is at J.P.'s play and then texts Michael back and asks him to meet for lunch on Friday, as she assumes lunch cannot be romantic. Michael texts back and suggests a fancy restaurant for lunch, which Mia worries about.
J.P.'s play is a thinly veiled dramatization of his relationship with Mia that includes details of their personal conversations and lives that Mia assumed were private. She is upset that the play paints her as a Manic Pixie Dream Girl who is rescued by J.P.'s character.
The next morning, Mia has her psychology final and has to describe a histocompatibility complex, and she realizes it is the reason that Michael smells better to Mia than J.P. ever has. Mia texts Tina excitedly to tell her.
Phillipe calls Mia again during lunch, this time to reveal a campaign ad that Lilly made. Mia shows her friends the video and they are shocked, but J.P. doesn't think that Mia should thank Lilly as Lilly owes her. Mia says that their incident was a long time ago, but J.P. tells her that Lilly is still a Moscovitz. Mia asks what that is supposed to mean and J.P. tells her that they always expect something in return for their favors. Boris jumps in and reveals that he and Michael have maintained a friendship and Michael is letting Boris live with him, which shocks Mia. Mia realizes that when Boris told her to write Michael back after their breakup that he and not Tina had told Boris that she had not been writing. Mia is confused as to why both Moscovtizs are being nice to her. She cleans out her locker and finds memories from all her years of high school, including the Whitman Sampler that Kenny gave her and one of the yellow roses Boris gave her as his secret snowflake.
J.P. comes over after school and Mia tries to ignite some passion, but all J.P. can do is talk about Sean Penn optioning his play. J.P. tells Mia he is considering taking a year off to move to Hollywood and invites Mia to come with him, but Mia asks why she would do that. J.P. assumes she would come because she loves him but Mia asks what she would even do there. J.P. tells her she could write something more substantial than a romance novel, but Mia reminds him that he hasn't even read her book yet. Mia tells J.P. that her parents will not let her take a year off to live in California, but J.P. reminds her that she didn't get in to college anywhere.
Mia and J.P. go to Boris' concert and Mia is surprised to see how many rich people paid good money to see him play violin. Mia goes to the restroom and runs into Lilly and asks her why she made the campaign ad for Phillipe and Lilly tells her it was a birthday present. Mia asks why Lilly is suddenly being so nice to her and she tells her that Michael found out about IHateMiaThermopolis.com and told Lilly she has to be nice. Mia asks why Lilly was being mean to her in the first place, but Lilly asks if she actually doesn't know. Mia tells her she doesn't and Lilly calls her dense before leaving. Mia congratulates Boris on his performance, but Tina takes her aside and tells her she thinks she is making a mistake by having sex with J.P. because she is doing for the wrong reasons and she and J.P. don't seem to have any passion.
The next morning, Helen wakes Mia up, which upsets her as it is Senior Skip Day, but Helen tells her that there is someone on the phone calling for a Daphne Delacroix. Mia takes the call and it is Claire French from Avon Books to offer Mia a publishing contract. She asks for Mia's real name, which Mia gives her, and goes over some details before Mia asks if she can get her number and call her back. Mia hangs up the phone and screams in excitement and then calls Tina to tell her the good news, who is very excited for her. Mia calls J.P. to share the news, but J.P. tells her she shouldn't just accept the first offer and should wait to see if a better one comes along. Mia reminds him that she's gotten tons of rejections, but J.P. says she should just use her actual name. Mia reminds him that she wants her book to get published on its own merit, but J.P. tells her she knows nothing about the publishing industry, even though she assures him the Royal Genovian Lawyers will look over everything. J.P. tells Mia she's making a mistake and she hangs up the phone as she begins to cry. Mia calls Phillipe to get permission to publish her book and he agrees, as long as the lawyers can go over everything. Mia calls Claire French back and accepts the offer, but Claire admits she googled her and asks if she is really the princess of Genovia. Claire tells Mia that the book will sell better if her name is attached to it, so Mia agrees to do so, as her proceeds will be going to Greenpeace.
Lana texts Mia to suggest outfits for her lunch with Michael but tells her she and Trisha are going to rent a boat to spy on them, which Mia begs her not to do. Mia stresses about meeting up with Michael but plans to just not get close enough to him to smell him. This plan goes awry when Michael greets her with a kiss on the cheek and Mia can feel herself go woozy. She tells Michael that she is getting published and he toasts to her success. Seeing Mia's ring, Michael asks if she and J.P. are engaged, but Mia tells him it is a friendship ring. Michael asks where J.P. is going to college and Mia reveals that he is thinking about taking a year off. Michael is surprised that they would be willing to do long distance but Mia tells him he asked her to go with him. Mia says she always assumed that if she took a year off it would be to help Greenpeace, not hang out in Hollywood, but Michael reminds her that her parents wouldn't approve of either plan. Michael tells Mia she will do the right thing, as she always does, but Mia reminds him that she ruined their relationship. Michael argues that he was the one that ruined their relationship, but Mia tells him he was right to break up with her and they both needed a break. Michael agrees that it should have been a break but Mia wasn't supposed to get engaged to someone else - which causes Mia's heart to sink - but Michael tells her he was kidding and didn't expect her to wait around forever.
Mia and Michael's conversation falls back into how they used to talk - before they even dated. Michael asks Mia about Lilly's campaign ad and Mia asks him if he had anything to do with it. Michael is confused that Mia and Lilly are still not friends but Mia tells him she doesn't know what happened between them. Mia sees Lana and Trisha arguing in the middle of the lake as she and Michael leave. Michael asks what Mia is up to for the rest of the day and invites her to go on a carriage ride with him. Mia objects, citing PETA, which only insults the cabbie, so she decides to go. Lars sits up front, leaving Mia and Michael alone in the back and when the cart lurches forward Michael puts his arm around her. Mia turns to tell him that she is still with J.P., but before she knows it they are making out. They make out for all 20 blocks of the ride and when it stops Mia panics and grabs Lars to leave. Michael starts to tell Mia that he still loves her but she stops him and tells him not to say it, so he sends her a text while she is on her way to therapy.
Grandmère ambushes Mia before her therapy appointment again, upset about Mia's romance novel getting published, but Mia just screams and storms past her. At their final session Mia tells Dr. Knutz about Grandmère showing up in the lobby and what just happened with Michael on the carriage ride and Dr. Knutz asks if Mia has thought at all about the horse he told her about the week before. Mia asks if instead of horses they can discuss her college options, since she knows she wasn't good enough to actually get into any of the schools she got in to, but Dr. Knutz tells her she has no way of knowing that and has her repeat the Serenity Prayer. Mia realizes that as a princess her problems are too weird for even a therapist and asks Dr. Knutz to look at a text with her. She opens Michael's message which says "Mia, I'm not sorry. And I'll wait. Love, Michael." Dr. Knutz says Michael's text is very direct and asks Mia what she is going to do. Mia tells him she can't do anything because she's dating J.P., but he points out that she's not attracted to J.P.. Mia tells him she can't break up with a perfectly nice guy just because her ex came back in to town, but Dr. Knutz says she can and should if she is still in love with her ex, otherwise it isn't fair to the perfectly nice guy. Mia says she doesn't know what to do, but Dr. Knutz says that when the time comes she will know what to do and ends their session.
J.P. and Tina both call Mia but she ignores them, eventually taking one of Tina's calls. Tina is calling to find out how her lunch with Michael went and Mia tells her it was fine. Tina tells Mia about Boris kind of keeping an eye on her for Michael and that he thinks that Michael is still in love with Mia and never stopped loving her, Mia starts crying and agrees that it’s romantic but tells Tina that she’s dating JP and they hang up. Mia starts bawling and Helen comes in and Mia asks her to hold her. Rocky comes in and tells Mia that HE’S the baby, but Helen says that sometimes Mia gets to be the baby, so Rocky pats Mia on the cheek and says “Good baby.”
J.P. e-mails and tells Mia that, even though she asked him not to, he told Sean Penn about her book and he could get her a deal for a quarter million dollars, which Mia considers as it would mean more money for Greenpeace. Mia also considers that Sean Penn's publisher would only be doing it because of who she is, as they have never read the book, and decides she can't do it, but e-mails J.P. back to thank him anyway. Mia changes her mind about having sex with J.P. after prom. Mia gets ready for prom while waiting for updates on the Genovian election that is too close to call. Paolo does her hair and she models Sebastiano's dresses for her family. Helen reminds Mia that she doesn't have to feel obligated to do anything after prom, but J.P. arrives and they take pictures of the corsage he got for her and Mia pinning on a boutonniere that Grandmère bought for her before they head off.
At prom, all the guys brag about the hotel rooms they got and whip out their keys, and Mia sees that J.P. has a key for the Waldorf. Mia remembers Shameeka and Tina saying that the Waldorf has been booked for months and asks him about it, but he tells her there must have been a cancellation as he got the room no problem. Mia goes to ask Tina and Lana what they think and Tina thinks J.P.'s story is possible but Lana tells her that J.P. obviously got the room ages ago and is lying.
Mia goes back and asks J.P. if he thinks it's weird that the paparazzi shows up everywhere they go, but J.P. just laughs it off as an odd coincidence and says it's good for Genovian tourism. Mia says it only seems to happen when she's with him, but J.P. just tells her he thinks it's annoying. Mia recalls that the paparazzi only started showing up the first time they went out - to Beauty and the Beast - and she asks him directly if he is the one calling the paparazzi but he laughs nervously and tells her no way. He asks her why she thinks he would do something like that and Mia tells him he might like seeing himself in the paper, but J.P. tells her to just enjoy the night as they are probably about to be crowned Prom King and Queen. Mia lies about her feet hurting so they can sit down and while J.P. goes to get her a band-aid she sees Lilly going in to the bathroom.
Mia follows Lilly in to the bathroom and asks if J.P. is a total fake and Lilly just turns and tells her it took her long enough to figure it out. Mia asks why Lilly didn't tell her and Lilly laughs sarcastically and reminds her that she started dating J.P. the second after he dumped her for Mia. Mia tells Lilly that J.P. did not dump her for her, but Lilly tells her that he did - he admitted it when he broke up with her and told her he was hopelessly in love with Mia and now that she and Michael had broken up he finally had a chance, but Lilly was too embarrassed to tell her the day of the breakup and she believed that her best friend wouldn't even look at the guy that had just broken her heart, but she was wrong. Mia is shocked but Lilly points out that Mia kissed J.P. the same day and then went to see Beauty and the Beast with him and Mia realizes that J.P. set her up. Lilly tells her that he set both of them up and admits that they slept together, revealing that J.P. also lied to Mia about being a virgin. Mia apologizes, but asks why Lilly didn't tell her and Lilly says she didn't think she needed to as her ex should have been off-limits but she didn't know how to apologize after acting crazy. Mia and Lilly both admit that they missed each other and acted like idiots for letting boys come between them. They pinky swear never to let it happen again and cry.
Two girls come in and ask if she is Mia Thermopolis because everyone is looking for her. Mia leaves the bathroom and Principal Gupta crowns her and J.P. Prom Queen and King. J.P. dips Mia and kisses her on stage. Mia pulls J.P. offstage and tells him they need to talk, but he misunderstands and heads for the elevators and asks if she should send Lars home. Mia tells J.P. that it's time for them to be honest and she knows he's the one calling paparazzi and that he lied about the hotel room and violated her trust by putting personal details into his play. J.P. tries to make excuses but Mia tells him the point is that he lied, and admits that she lied too, about her college admissions. She tells J.P. that she knows why he broke up with Lilly and that he slept with her, but J.P. tries to accuse Lilly of lying and asks why Mia would believe her anyway and accuses Mia of being crazy. Mia says she is definitely not crazy and J.P. looks scared. The elevator doors open and Lars asks if they are going anywhere but Mia says no. She gives J.P. his ring back and gives him the speech Grandmère taught her. J.P. tries to explain but Mia stops him and tells him to call Stacey Cheeseman and tells him goodbye.
Mia calls the Royal Genovian Lawyers to get them to stop J.P.'s movie and as she hangs up she sees Michael. Mia asks Michael why he's there and he tells her that Lilly told him to show up at the elevators at prom around midnight because Mia might need him. Michael asks why he's there and Mia says that Lilly must have known that she always wanted to spend her senior prom with him. Michael asks Lars if he needs to go beat up J.P. and Lars says definitely, but Mia suggests that instead Lars take the rest of the night off and Mia and Michael go back to his place. At Michael's apartment he gives Mia her snowflake necklace back, having found and kept it after she threw it when they broke up, hoping that they would get back together eventually. He tells Mia that if she wants he will buy her a diamond snowflake necklace to replace her silver one, and they sleep together.
The next day, Mia returns to the loft with Michael, who her mother is thrilled to see. Phillipe is announced as the winner of the election and flies back to the U.S. for Mia's graduation. Tina texts Mia to ask what happened the night before and Mia tells her that she and J.P. broke up and she went over to Michael's. Lilly texts Mia that she saw Mia leave with Michael and she better not break his heart again. J.P. texts Mia that he's sorry about everything, but he has a new idea for a play based on him and Stacey Cheeseman.
After graduation, J.P.'s dad tells Phillipe that it looks like their kids won't be going to Hollywood after all, but Mia interrupts that that is because she will be attending Sarah Lawrence, which thrills her family. Michael asks Mia to dance and they join the others, including Phillipe and Ms. Martinez. Phillipe says something that causes Ms. Martinez to slap him and walk away. Mia asks Phillipe what he did and he tells her he said what he says to all women and goes after her. Phillipe convinces her to return to the party and Michael jokes that Ms. Martinez will be Mia's new stepmother and Mia is horrified that she might have to go through a parent dating a teacher all over again. Mia reflects on the last 4 years and everything that has happened since she became a princess and decides it was all for the best as it allowed her to get a happy ending.

She attends Barack Obama's inauguration with Michael and her friends come to visit for Spring Break. Over the summer Mia helps to open the Royal Genovian Health and Wellness Center, an idea she had after the global recession caused Genovia to lose tourism money. Mia insisted on allowing 50 low-income families to use the center in addition to the wealthy clientele. Mia spends her Christmas break in Genovia.[7]
Lilly and Mia rank their most romantic movies. Mia, Lilly, Tina, and Grandmère rank Oscars looks. Mia spends her birthday at the loft and gets lunch with her friends. Physical Appearance
Mia at her desk, Princess Lessons: A Princess Diaries Book
As a freshman, Mia describes herself as 5'9" and flat chested (32A bra size) with size 10 feet.[1] Mia thinks her mouth is too large. Mia believes her only attractive feature to be her blue-grey eyes.[1] She is described in the newspaper article revealing she is a princess as a "Statuesque Beauty" which Mia does not believe.[1] By her junior year she has grown to 5'10" and due to her binge eating her bra size increases to a 36C.[8] After getting her binge eating in check Mia's bra size goes back down to a 34B.[9]
Her hair is dishwater blonde and is neither curly nor straight (it is somewhat wavy and in between).[1] When it grows out it becomes triangular and shaped like a yield sign, so she has to keep it short.[1] After her makeover from Paolo, Mia's hair is very short and Rosemary's Baby-esque, and highlighted so it is pure blonde.[1] She mistakenly gets her hair cut very short just before the beginning of her junior year,[10] but by her senior year her hair has grown out a bit and is able to be worn longer.[9] While she is in college her hair is around chin-length and returns to it's former yield-sign shape as Paolo is unable to constantly monitor.[7]
Mia has thin lips.[2]
Mia often wears her Doc Marten combat boots and keeps Greenpeace buttons on her backpack.[1] As a senior in high school Mia realizes the importance of appearance as it creates an important first impression and spends more time and effort on her appearance and fashion.[9]
Mia has a night guard that she wears overnight because she grinds her teeth.[6]
Mia has bad posture and often slumps.[7]
Personality and Traits
Chesley McLaren, Perfect Princess: A Princess Diaries Book
Mia considers herself a liar - saying that sometimes she thinks all she ever does is lie.[1] Mia's nostrils flare when she lies,[2] though she is able to control this a bit better by her senior year.[9]
Mia is somewhat neurotic.[1]
Mia bites her nails.[1]
Mia is very insecure about her appearance (see above).[1]
Mia gets the hiccups if she drinks something hot and then eats bread.[1]
Mia is very into science fiction, including Star Wars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and she even has a Princess Leia screensaver.[11]
Environmentalism and Animal Welfare

Mia Protesting with Lilly and Tina, Princess Lessons: A Princess Diaries Book
Mia is vegetarian[A 1], though she was vegan at one point, cutting out eggs and dairy, in addition to meat.[1] Mia begins eating meat again after her breakup from Michael.[10] She later identifies as a flexatarian, not ordering meat for herself (except in times of extreme stress when she needs a quick source of protein) and only eating it when someone else serves her meat at an event.[9]
Mia is a supporter of Greenpeace and wants to take a year after high school to go on a ship to save the whales, and her father donates $100 a day to Greenpeace in order for her to continue taking princess lessons[1] and later donates $200 a day when Mia has to take them for longer than expected.[12] After Mia's fashion supplement appears in the New York Times, Mia announces that the proceeds from Sebastiano's line will be going to Greenpeace.[2] For her 18th birthday Mia receives over $250,000 in donation to Greenpeace.[9] Mia also donates her author proceeds from her book, Ransom My Heart, to Greenpeace.[9]
- ↑ Note: Mia does eat fish, so her vegetarianism is actually pescetarianism, though Mia never self-identifies as pescetarian.

Confrontation
Though initially extremely non-confrontational, Mia grows to be more confrontational throughout the series. Starting shortly after she discovers she is a princess she stands up to Lilly, defies her parents, and fights back with Lana.[1]
Skills and Abilities
Math and Science
Mia was noticeably bad at algebra, requiring her to go to after school tutoring to raise her grade up from an F to a D.[1] As she progressed, she continued to be bad at all of her math classes[13][10][9] and received a poor score on her math SAT.[9]
She was lab partners with Kenny for most of her science classes, and he ended up doing almost all of their homework.[5][13][10]
Writing
Mia is an extremely talented writer. She first realized it when she believed she had no talent but Lilly told her she does have one which she eventually realizes was writing.[12] Mia keeps a diary all throughout high school[1] and a blog during college.[7] During her senior year of high school, she wrote a novel, Ransom My Heart, which was published by Avon Books.[9]
Relationships
Friendships
Mia and Lilly watching TV, Holiday Princess: A Princess Diaries Book
Lilly Moscovitz
Lilly is Mia's best friend, starting before the beginning of the series. They bonded in first grade after a male student dropped his pants on the way to the music room. Mia was horrified, having grown up with her mother and never seen a penis before, but Lilly, having a brother and her dad at home just looked the student dead in the eye and said "I've seen bigger."[5] Mia helps Lilly with her TV show, Lilly Tells It Like It Is and they often pass notes in class and create lists for fun (such as Lilly Moscovitz's List of Hottest Guys).[1] Their friendship is off-and-on, as they fight often, but they always come back together.[1][14][15] During their junior year they stop being friends after Michael and Mia and J.P. and Lilly break up and Mia and J.P. begin to date. Lilly creates IHateMiaThermopolis.com as a way to cyberbully Mia.[8] They remain civil to each other, but not friendly, until the end of their senior year. After Michael discovers IHateMiaThermopolis.com he tells Lilly she has to be nice to Mia, so Lilly makes Phillipe a campaign ad. At prom Mia and Lilly finally make up and become friends again after Lily reveals the true nature of her breakup with J.P. and Mia realizes how many things he has lied about.[9]
Tina Hakim Baba
Tina and Mia become friends while Mia and Lilly are in a fight after Mia's makeover. They become close and Tina joins their friend group when Mia and Lilly make up.[1] Mia often goes to Tina instead of Lilly for romantic advice and regularly considers Tina to be a better friend. She is always supportive of Mia and her decisions. After Mia and Lilly stop talking Tina becomes Mia's best friend.[8] Tina is the one that encourages Mia to try and get back together with Michael when he returns from Japan.[9]

Mia has a long standing crush on Josh Richter at the beginning of her freshman year. Josh asks Mia out to the Cultural Diversity Dance and kisses her in front of the paparazzi as a publicity stunt.[1]
Kenny Showalter
Kenny begins sending Mia anonymous love notes in the fall of 2003. He reveals himself to be behind the notes on Halloween after seeing the Rocky Horror Picture Show and asks Mia out. She agrees and they go to a Japanese anime marathon the next day.[5] They continue to date, though Mia will not let him kiss her and she secretly harbors feelings for Michael. Kenny tells her that he loves her (and later shouts it in the hallway at school) though Mia does not return the sentiment. Kenny ultimately breaks up with her because he believes her to be in love with Boris Pelkowski.[2]
Michael Moscovitz

J.P. Reynolds-Abernathy
Mia and J.P. begin dating immediately after Mia's breakup from Michael[8] after he dumps Lilly for Mia (though Mia does not know that this was why they broke up). J.P. tends to like or dislike everything that Mia likes or dislikes, which her mother dislikes. They date until the end of their senior year, when Mia starts to realize that he has been lying to her. J.P. gets a hotel room for after prom without telling her and Mia discovers the nature of his breakup with Lilly, in addition to realizing that he has been the one calling the paparazzi on them every time they go out. J.P. tries to deny it, but Mia ultimately ends the relationship and gets back together with Michael.[9]
